Sofia University
Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski is the first institution of higher education in Bulgaria. The first step towards its foundation was the opening of a Course in Pedagogy at the First Secondary School for Boys in Sofia in 1887. Due to the success of this teacher-training course,the National Assembly issued a decree at the end of transforming the course into a School of Higher Education. In 1904 a decree by Prince Ferdinand turned it into a university that was given the name of St. Kliment Ohridski a year later. For more than a century Sofia University has been the national foremost centre for university education and research in both fundamental theoretical and applied areas. Today it is the largest university in the country with 102 degree programmes offered by 16 faculties. Тhe University has since held a leading position among universities in the country, with the highest rate of student and staff mobilities and the most significant contribution to the maintenance of European standards in higher education.

Plovdiv University
Plovdiv University, named in honor of the Bulgarian historian Paisiy Hilendarski, is the city’s leading cultural and scientific institution. It is the largest institution of higher education in Southern Bulgaria, and the second largest Bulgarian university, after St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. The University of Plovdiv is built on the foundation laid by the Higher Teacher-Training Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, which opened in July 1961. The Institute was promoted to university status by government decree on 12 January 1972. In 1973, it became the first higher institution in Plovdiv to offer language and literature studies, offering the B.A. in Bulgarian Language and Literature and Russian Language and Literature. Soon after, a program in Slavonic Languages and Literature (with Specialization in Czech Language and Literature) was added. A degree in Education was offered for the first time in 1984, Law degree programs were introduced in 1992, and Economics degree programs were launched in 1994. Today the University of Plovdiv is a true university by international standarts, since it provides training to students in the four major fields of higher education: natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, and economics. “ Paisiy Hilendarski” Plovdiv University has been institutionally accredited by National Certification and Accreditation Board (Protocol No. 1 of 15 February 2001).

Technical University Of Sofia
Over 800 highly qualified lecturers train the students in all educational-qualification and academic degrees: Professional Bachelor, Bachelor, Master, and PhD. University Of Chemical Technology And Metallurgy
The University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy /UCTM/ – Sofia is a state higher-education institution which is accredited at the higher standards in Bulgaria. UCTM operates on the principle of academic autonomy under the Higher Education Act and the internal regulations that are the basis for implementing the priorities of the European Higher Education Area. The University educates over students annually in Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees in regular and part-time forms. Issue of European engineers graduate diploma supplement as well as joint degrees with the Technical University of Hamburg - Harburg, Otto von Gerike University in Germany and Moscow State University Press. The credit transfer system ECTS is used in UCTM. Some of courses are taught respectively in German, French and English. The University maintains a long-term cooperation with many foreign universities in joint projects, training programs and exchange of students and teachers. Medical University - Sofia
The Medical University-Sofia is the oldest higher medical school in Bulgaria. For over 106 years it has been a leader in medical education in the country, and a provider of quality education to Bulgarian and foreign students. In 2021 MU-Sofia was selected with a maximum score to be among the 7 research universities in Bulgaria. The list is based on a methodology developed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria. This status is valid for 4 years and is awarded based on 3 main indicators: scientific results visible in the international databases Scopus and/or Web of Science, development of the scientific capacity of the academic staff, and social and economic impact. The National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (Protocol № 22 / 19.12.2019) awarded MU-Sofia with institutional accreditation for a period of 6 years. The score of the university was 9.56 out of 10 possible points. According to the ranking system for higher education institutions in Bulgaria, for almost a decade the Medical University of Sofia has been helding the first place in the main areas of the field: Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Health Care and Public Health. The university is listed first among Bulgarian universities and holds a very good position in the region according to international rankings such as U-Multirank, URAP, and QS World University Rankings. Medical University - Sofia has at its disposal the bases of 13 university hospitals for training its students and doctoral students. The National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts “Kr. Sarafov ”(NATFA) is the first higher theatre school in Bulgaria. Rakovski National Defence College
The Rakovski National Defence College, based in Sofia, is Bulgaria's oldest military institution of higher education. It was officially established on 1 March 1912 with an act of the National Assembly of Bulgaria and opened on 4 January 1915, delayed due to the Balkan Wars. Since its creation, the college has served as the main institution for the training of military commanders and personnel in Bulgaria and the primary one in the field of national security and military science, as well as NATO operational compatibility. The college trains 1,500 officers and civil individuals a year and has 148 qualified lecturers.

Университет "Проф. д-р Асен Златаров" е единственият държавен университет в Югоизточна България. Основан е на 6 октомври 1963 г. с Указ № 162 на МС като Висш химико-технологичен институт. Пет години по-късно институтът e преименуван на Висш химико-технологичен институт „Проф. д-р Асен Златаров“, което завинаги го свързва с името на неговия патрон. През 1995 г. с решение на Народното събрание е утвърден като Университет „Проф. д-р Асен.Златаров”. Университет "Проф. д-р Асен Златаров" e институционално акредитиран до 26.07.2023 г. с оценка 8.84 (решение на акредитационния съвет към НАОА, протокол № 14/26.07.2018 г.) Обучението в Университета се осъществява в пет факултета – Факултет по технически науки, Факултет по природни науки, Факултет по обществени науки, Факултет по обществено здраве и здравни грижи и Медицински факултет. В неговия състав влизат три колежа – Технически колеж, Медицински колеж и Колеж по туризъм и два департамента – Департамент по езиково обучение и Департамент за квалификация и професионално развитие на педагогическите специалисти (ДКПРПС). Обучението в Университет "Проф. д-р Асен Златаров" се извършва по 18 професионални направления в 45 акредитирани бакалавърски и над 30 магистърски програми. В структурата на Университета достойно място заемат Централната научноизследователска лаборатория и Електронно-изчислителният център. Студентите, обучаващи се в Университета, придобиват образователно-квалификационни степени “професионален бакалавър”, “бакалавър” и “магистър“, както и научната и образователна степен “доктор”. В Университета преподават над 320 висококвалифицирани преподаватели, от които 127 хабилитирани. Организацията и управлението на образователния процес в него е в съответствие с Европейските изисквания и критерии за качествен образователен и изследователски процес. Разработена е университетската система за оценяване и поддържане на качеството на обучение.
