In 1982, Professor Mohammed Omar Bashir presented the idea of a civil university to some Omdurman figures who adopted the idea and worked to implement it. After several meetings and deliberations, the first founding meeting of the university was held in 1984 at the home of Mr. Mohamed Sayed Ahmed. The University of Juba (Arabic: جامعة جوبا) is an English-language public university located in Juba, South Sudan. It was founded in 1975 under by the former Vice president of and President of Southern Sudan, Abel Alier Kwai. The university was temporarily relocated to Khartoum as a result of the Second Sudanese Civil War, and moved back to Juba in July 2011, after South Sudan obtained independence. It is the best ranked university in South Sudan.
