Þekkingarmiðstöð Sjálfsbjargar is a knowledge-centre for people with disabilities. The centre is a non-profit organization. The vision of the centre is to empower people with disabilities to live an independent life. The aim is to build up a data base of information of (almost) everything concerning life with disability. The centre’s role is to give information and support, offer courses and peer tutoring. Information is given to disabled people, family and friends, firms, people that are temporarily disabled or anyone that need information. We promote knowledge regarding people with disabilities. The values of the centre is to be independent and aim at the individual needs of clients. The information is accessible and the needs of the clients are met in an efficient way by gathering all kind of practical information concerning everyday life of disabled people in Iceland. Information is available through our webpage or by talking to our counselors. The mission statement is: Your way to independent life. Hjá Þekkingarmiðstöðinni er yfirsýn yfir réttindi, þjónustu og aðstoð sem auðveldar hreyfihömluðu fólki að lifa sjálfstæðu lífi og taka sjálfstæðar ákvarðanir. Fræðsla er mjög mikilvægur hluti af starfi Þekkingarmiðstöðvarinnar, og er hún í formi jafningjafræðslu, námskeiða og fyrirlestra. Fræðslan er sniðin að þörfum hreyfihamlaðra og hefur því yfirleitt ekki verið í boði annars staðar. Til Þekkingarmiðstöðvarinnar leita hreyfihamlað fólk, aðstandendur, fagfólk, þjónustuaðilar, fjölmiðlar, fyrirtæki, stofnanir og sveitarfélög. Þjónustan gjaldfrjáls og öllum opin. Markmið Þekkingarmiðstöðvarinnar eru: • Að veita fötluðu fólki og aðstandendum þeirra upplýsingar og stuðning á þeirra eigin forsendum • Að standa fyrir námskeiðum og jafningjafræðslu • Að veita hlutlausar upplýsingar og ráðgjöf • Að efla þekkingu á málefnum hreyfihamlaðs fólks og vinna að hugarfarsbreytingu í samfélaginu
