Un-Habitat Lao Pdr
UN-Habitat is the United Nations entity responsible for developing urban policies and translating them into action to create sustainable cities and human settlements. As UN-Habitat's representative in Lao PDR, our focus is on developing and implementing urban policies that foster sustainable cities and human settlements in response to the country's dynamic urbanization. Lao PDR is currently experiencing a significant urban growth, with an annual urbanization rate of 4.9%, which is notably higher than the global average. This growth, largely driven by rural-urban migration, presents unique challenges and opportunities in urban planning and development. In many urban areas of Lao PDR, infrastructural challenges are evident. A substantial number of urban households are without electricity, and around 10% of the urban population lacks access to improved drinking water sources. Additionally, effective waste management remains a concern, with a significant proportion of daily waste being improperly disposed of, leading to environmental and health issues. Recognizing these challenges, our role at UN-Habitat Lao PDR is to facilitate the development of comprehensive urban planning strategies. These strategies are aimed at addressing the myriad issues arising from rapid urbanization, including housing deficits, infrastructure needs, poverty, unemployment, safety, pollution, and the impacts of climate change. Our mandate, as established by the UN General Assembly in 1978, positions us to lead sustainable urban development initiatives in Lao PDR. By collaborating with local stakeholders and leveraging international expertise, we strive to transform the urbanization process into an opportunity for enhancing the quality of life for all residents in Lao PDR. https://fukuoka.unhabitat.org/en/tag/lao/
