Indian Ocean Commission
Created in 1982 and institutionalised in 1984, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is an intergovernmental organisation regrouping five member States: the Union of Comoros, France/Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles. As the only regional organisation in Africa comprised solely of islands, it supports the specificities of its member States on the continental and international stages. Indeed, island States are particularly vulnerable to external shocks, whether they are economic and financial, climatic and ecological, food and energy-related. The IOC’s mission is thus to bring together the strengths and pool the resources of its member countries, raise awareness about the specific challenges being faced by developing island States, and promote Indianoceania, a region of unique human, cultural and natural diversity. The IOC gives shape to this regional solidarity thanks to the active support of its international partners which finance and support its cooperation projects. The projects implemented by the IOC cover a wide spectrum of sectors: climate change, fisheries, maritime security, connectivity, food security, education, culture, public health…
