Sri Lanka Police Service (Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකා පොලීසිය Shrī Lanka Polīsiya; Tamil: இலங்கை காவல் Ilaṅkai Kāval) is normally referred as Sri Lanka Police, an exquisite national police force of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Police force has total of manpower of more than about all working for maintaining and enforcing law & order in the town, enhancing public safety and maintaining peace throughout the Sri Lanka. The highest rank of Sri Lanka police is IGP, The professional head of the police is the Inspector General of Police who reports to the Minister of the defence as well as the National Police Commission. During the Sri Lankan civil war, the police service became an integral part of maintaining of the nation's security, primarily focusing on internal security. Many police officers have been killed in the line of duty mainly due to terrorist attacks. Specially trained Police commando/counter-terrorist units named Special Task Force (STF) are regularly deployed in joint operations with the armed forces for counter-terrorism operations and VVIP protection. The police command structure in Northern and Eastern provinces is closely integrated with the other security organisations under the authority of the Joint Operations Command. The Police service is reached island wide on the 119 emergency number.

Sri Lanka Police - It
The Police Department inaugurated the computerization process in 1980, at the Personnel Division to enter the Personnel data of existing man power. Short period after the commencement; a team consisting of twenty Police officers was selected as computer operators through a competitive exam. Thus, these twenty officers seconded to the Implementation & Progress control Division in the Police Department. These twenty officers became the pioneers with the establishment of the computer section of the Fourth Floor in the Police Headquarters in 1989. Subsequently, a permanent Computer Unit was established in 1990 in the Police Headquarters building at 5th floor, with a mini computer branded as "WANG" along with 06 terminals. A separate division was formed as the Information Technology Division came to an operation in a newly constructed 6th floor premises at the Police Headquarters in 1990, which was a brainchild of Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. Achilles Joseph who died in 2009. It is appreciated his contribution to uplift the standard of Information Technology Division.
