Digitalization Of Terrestrial Tv Broadcasting Project In Sri Lanka
The History of Television Broadcasting in Sri Lanka dates back to 1979 with the debut of Television Broadcasting in Sri Lanka. However, a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s television journey was marked in 1981 when Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) was gifted to Sri Lanka by the government of Japan. The establishment of SLRC is therefore a symbol of amicability between Sri Lanka and Japan. The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) project in Sri Lanka is the next venture which strengthens the diplomatic ties between Sri Lanka and Japan. DTTB project marks the renaissance of the television era in Sri Lanka by ushering High Definition (HD) transmission in place of Analog transmission. It thereby promises Sri Lankan television viewers the accessibility to clearly clear vision with no additional pay. The implementation of this project keeps doors open for multiple value-added services for general public in addition to the digital broadcasting technology. Sri Lanka has signed a Loan Agreement with Japan under Soft Loan facility with regard to the DTTB Project. Plans are afoot to commence the project in 2023 and culminate in 2025 turning a new page in the annals of television history in Sri Lanka enabling the Sri Lankans to enjoy a “clearly clear” vision.
