Islamic Azad University, Tehran Medical Branch was established in June 17, 1985. The Islamic Azad University is nongovernmental (ONG) and the non-profit organization of the public utility and its budget is provided by the student inscription fees. The University began its’ activities with presidency of Dr. Seyed Hossein Yahyavi and commissioning of four educational levels of professional doctorate degree in medicine, nursing, midwifery and laboratory sciences in bachelor level with absorption of 376 students and now with over students has three approval school, 17 branches in educational levels of professional doctorate degree, master, bachelor of science, discontinued bachelor and associate degree. From March 2007 Tehran Medical Branch with Presidency of Dr. Ahmad Firouzan still continuous its’ activities with the aim of quantitative and qualitative development. Efforts to attract more faculty members, activate Educational Development Center (EDC), establishment and commissioning of new fields, equipping hospitals, Construction of modern subspecialty hospitals with 240 beds on Bou-ali hospital in current land hospital, set up research centers and follow-up cultural issues are the different subjects which was already considerable in Tehran Medical Branch. 225 officially full-time faculty members are collaborated in this University. Close to 80% of them have Ph.D. and subspecialty degree with the academic rank of Professor, Associate and Assistant Professor. The total number of Tehran Medical Branches’ graduates till September 2007, was around eleven thousand individual, 3700 of them graduates in associate degrees, 3210 in bachelor level, 370 individuals in discontinued bachelor level, 200 graduates in master degree and 3500 graduates in professional doctorate degree.

Digestive Disease Research Institute
The Digestive Diseases Research Center (DDRC) was originally founded in 1976 at the same time the Gastroenteroloy ward was established in Shariati Hospital, and then called “The Great Cyrus” Hospital. Weekly scientific sessions on diagnosis and treatment of patients referring with gastroenterology diseases were among main activities in this center. Training the first group of gastroenterology fellows was set up in this gastroenterology center at the same time with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. DDRC is the first research center on gastroenterology diseases that has been established in Iran. The goal of this center is to provide the suitable infrastructure for research in the field of gastroenterology. This center aims at producing, prioritizing, and disseminating the knowledge that the scientific society, patients, and the public need for health promotion in the society. The research that has been done in this center has significantly helped in advancing knowledge in the field of gastroenterology at international level. In 2011, this center was approved as Digestive Diseases Research Institute (DDRI) by the Council of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Activities in DDRI are divided between three research centers on pancreatic and hepatobiliary diseases, gastrointestinal and hepatic cancers and autoimmune and motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. DDRI officially collaborates with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
