Proizvodnja i prerada lignita, Izrada tehničke dokumentacije, proizvodnja toplotne energije, elektronska obrada podataka i dr. Vlada NR Srbije odlučila je da se 31. decembra 1949. godine udruže rudnici „Kolubara”, „Junkovac” i „Prkosava” u jedno rudarsko preduzeće, nazvano Kolubarski rudnici lignita koje je praktično formirano 1. jula 1950. godine. To znači da je u savremenom smislu reči Kombinat „Kolubara”, u kome se ugalj eksploatiše od 1896. godine, osnovan pre 1950. Počeci rudarenja vezuju se za 1896. godinu, kada je otvorena prva jama „Zvizdar”. Prekretnicu u razvoju rudarstva predstavlja početak površinske eksploatacije lignita, kada je 1952. godine otvoren prvi površinski kop Polje „A”. U planu razvoja je proširenje postojećih i otvaranje novih površinskih otkopa.
