National Museum Of Natural Science
Welcoming more than 3 million visitors each year, the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) is the largest of the three major science museums in Taiwan. Located in Taichung, in central Taiwan, NMNS comprises not only a natural history museum but also a science center for hands-on learning, a space-theater (semi-spherical dome), and a botanical garden. NMNS additionally oversees the administration and programming of three off-site educational parks focused on geology and ecology. The Museum's exhibitions and public programs are anchored by its mission to engage learners of all ages in scientific research and science education. With more than square meters (over 1 million square feet) of space available for permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions and programs, NMNS offers learning opportunities and facilitates dialogue on topics ranging from Taiwan's endemic species and ecology to contemporary anthropology and emerging technologies. In January 2024, the Museum opened a newly designed rooftop garden for its youngest learners (ages 3+). NMNS has steadily grown its collection from its first 312 objects in 1983 to more than 1.7 million specimens today, representing archaeology, anthropology, zoology, geology, paleontology, mycology, and botany (including live plants). The collections are managed by the Museum's staff of 14 registrars and collections managers, and are actively leveraged for scientific discovery and dissemination by its 66 researchers/curators. Importantly, the NMNS collection serves the global scientific community: each year, around researchers from Taiwan and abroad access the collections.
