Merrill C. Berman Collection
Over the past fifty years, Merrill C. Berman has built a collection of avant-garde art and graphic design that is comparable in scope and depth to the collections of institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. The collection is strong in twentieth century European art of the interwar period (1918-1939)—Dada, Bauhaus, Futurism, Neue Sachlichkeit, Russian Constructivism—but it also includes work of adjacent periods and geographical regions as they relate to key collecting interests. The collection includes well-known artists such as John Heartfield, Gustav Klutsis, Valentina Kulagina, El Lissitzky, E. McKnight Kauffer, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and Jan Tschichold, but also those who may be less familiar such as Carl Grossberg, Lou Loeber, Josef Peeters, Nikolai Sedel’nikov, and Elena Semenova. It represents a complex history of modernism in which avant-garde artists actively produced both fine and applied art—commercial and political—often in communication with each other. Merrill C. Berman has long supported scholarly inquiry and the realization of exhibitions and publications in the United States and abroad. This website provides an overview of the collection and its long-standing role as a resource. Only a small part of the holdings, however, are represented here. If you are interested in learning more about any aspect of the collection, please contact us by email

Saratoga Springs History Museum
The Saratoga Springs History Museum was founded in 1883 as the Saratoga Historical Society. Being one of the earliest organizations of its type, our early collections and displays were quite eclectic. Our founders included Ellen Hardin Walworth (one of the four original founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution) and many influential residents of Saratoga County. The museum acquired artifacts from the Trustees’ personal collections and from all around northern New York. Since then, our mission has become focused on the City of Saratoga Springs. Today our museum presents changing exhibitions and public programs, and serves numerous researchers annually on three floors of a historic 1870s gambling casino, the Canfield Casino, designated a National Historic Landmark. Our mission is to foster public education and chronicle Saratoga Springs's history by operating the History Museum, conducting programs, and collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting materials that document the city’s social, political, economic, geological, and cultural history. We invite you to be one of the tens of thousands of people who visit the Museum each year to experience the history of the Spa City!

Our mission is to empower artists and communities of color to care for our own collections and tell our own stories. We do this by making critical resources such as art conservation, exhibition design, research, technical and administrative support directly available and accessible to those under-resourced and under-recognized by traditional art institutions. We leverage our professional skills, networks, and experience to collaborate with BIPOC artists and communities to create sustainable community-led projects while also investigating and addressing the root causes of inequities in the arts and culture landscape.
