The Phlod-Nar

Randolf Smeets, a.k.a The Phlod-Nar is a Belgian composer and multi-instrumentalist with Dutch roots. Starting around 1996, within his first 10 years he completed 5 totally different albums, the genre-hopping Black Paint and Red Ochre, ambient works on Utriusque Cosmi, piano improvisations on The Crystalline Piano, and more adventures. To express his individualistic creativity it’s impossible to pigeonhole his music. Even the ways of creating his music are limitless: from written scores, electro-acoustic noises, electronic programming, live played instruments, extreme audio editing, reworked and layered recordings, improvisation, etc. Next to his main solo project, collaborations and other solo projects popped op over the years. One is The Mun Astronauts, his duo with Barry Schuwirth creating atmospheric ambient music with piano and electronics. As a composer of chamber music you can find works released under his real name Randolf Smeets. Krautrock and instrumental postrock was his, now-abandoned, project Agula, where all the instruments (guitar, bass, drums, percussion) are played by Randolf himself. Other solo-projects: extreme sound manipulation and using techniques like Xenochrony, plunderphonics and John Cage’s aleatoric elements you can find in A Z I M O G U. With singer-songwriter Vigilan Freeland he developed his playing abilities, in studio as well as live, with the instruments electric bass guitar, acoustic guitar, clarinet and piano. In a review of his Works For Piano, Kelly O’Neil most aptly summarized his work saying “Smeets is a highly creative composer…liberating musical constraints yet still keeping his works aurally pleasurable”

Hildebrandt Consort

HILDEBRANDT CONSORT, named after the organ builder celebrated by J.S. Bach, Zacharias Hildebrandt, was founded by its artistic director, Wouter Dekoninck. Hildebrandt Consort performs on international stages and (organ) festivals, live on the radio and television, in cultural centres, the Flemish Parliament, and appeared with the 'De Nieuwe Snaar' folk and cabaret group in 2014. The ensemble specialises in the interpretation of transcriptions for organ and baroque orchestra. International reviews of their productions, such as the St. John Passion, the B minor Mass and Wouter Dekoninck’s creation of the Grosse Messe 1739 für Bach und Luther, have been glowing. Like no other, it has a true understanding of the chemistry of metamorphoses, like the old masters themselves. These passionate musicians transform violin concerti into organ concerti, keyboard suites into orchestral suites (with or without solo organ) and preludes into fugues for baroque orchestra (and solo organ). Among the group's much loved and still running programs are [Bach]²: The Art of Transcription: J.S. Bach and the Spirit of Handel. In 2017, the ensemble unveiled the Grosse Messe 1739 für Bach und Luther, a transcription of J.S. Bach's Dritter Teil der Clavierübung, a monumental organ mass of J.S. Bach colourfully translated by Wouter Dekoninck into the soundscape of Bach's baroque orchestra with singers. The 2018-2019 season will premiere their brand-new transcription programme, Tea with Mendelssohn and Coffee with Schumann, an enchanting combination of magnificent organ works and intimate chamber music for strings. The CD [Bach]²: The Art of Transcription, will also be released during the same season. Hildebrandt Consort is also the driving force behind the concert series Bach in Leuven, where the ensemble is in residence.(Translation: Jill Rupnow)

't Ey

Musicclub 't Ey goes back to 1991, when its predecessor,'t Eynde (the End) was started.'t Eynde was more of a brown café, where small scale concerts were organised from time to time. In the organisation moved to an old school building, which over the last ten years has been transformed (and still is being transformed) into a serious though small scale music club: a concert hall for up to 100 people, a stage, a bar, a backstage area with a kitchen and a large but cosy attic.'t Ey also has its own house orchestra, the Fanteyfare. At 't Ey all the work, from cleaning and cooking over infrastructure works and sound and light engineering to public relations and putting together the concert agenda is done by one paid employee and a large number of commited volunteers. In 2010,'t Ey organised more than 50 concerts and several workshops We can boast of an ever rising number of concertgoers every year. The prime motive for our engagement to what we call "fragile" music genres is not purely entertainment: we believe that such small-scale concerts as we organise them really bring people (artists, volunteers and public) closer together. As a result, we are opposed to a commercialised music scene, even if that would be a folk scene. Yet we want our gigs to be organised in a professional way with an eye for real quality, in exchange for a bit of respect of public and musicians alike. This is the only profit we make.
