Ottawa Jazz Festival
What began as a weekend of outdoor jazz in Major’s Hill Park back in 1980 has evolved into Canada’s second largest jazz festival and one of the National Capital Region’s most highly anticipated musical events of the summer. Founded in 1980 by local musicians who wanted to celebrate the popular jazz scene in Ottawa, the Festival quickly grew, attracting such international names as Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Herb Ellis, Bob Brookmeyer, Wynton Marsalis and Milt Jackson. Larger and larger crowds came out each year, and the Festival began to stretch beyond traditional jazz and attract new supporters. Expanding beyond its outdoor venue the Festival ventured into indoor satellite events and introduced the late night jam sessions so popular today. Spanning all genres and inspirations of jazz, diverse cultures, traditions and an array of styles that covers the spectrum from pop, rock to lush harmonies, as the only outdoor music festival with a grand presence in the city’s downtown core, the Festival highlights consummate and celebrated artists with international reputations, as well as, new and emerging talent. Set against the stunning backdrop of downtown Ottawa, audiences have a selection from ticketed and free shows.

Our stage in Del Crary Park has hosted the likes of City & Colour (solo), Crash Test Dummies, Carly Rae Jepsen, Big Wreck, Tegan and Sara, Our Lady Peace, Tom Cochrane, The Reklaws, Kiefer Sutherland, Walk Off the Earth, Tyler Shaw, Randy Bachman, and many more. The quality of our line-up generates a sizeable audience – some in 2019 – which in turn provides an economic boost that helps fuel our downtown and area tourist attractions. An economic impact study commissioned in 2016 pegged the number at $4.2 million; a significant shot in the arm for our hotels, restaurants, and bars. Musicfest also helps create the equivalent of 44 jobs throughout its annual summer run. We’re funded by corporate sponsorships (most of whom are small locally owned businesses), through multi-level government support, fundraising initiatives, and private donations and we remain steadfastly, and uniquely, free of charge for our audience. That’s right – it is absolutely FREE to see the likes of Sloan, Serena Ryder, Gordon Lightfoot, 54.40, Blue Rodeo and so many others at Peterborough Musicfest because our feisty, industrious, creative city believes music should be enjoyed by all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we invite you to be part of it.

Qw4rtz
