Smu Symphonia
Since its establishment in 2003, SMU Symphonia has steadily grown into a full-fledged wind and strings symphonic group, taking part in local and regional events such as the “20th Conference of the Asia and Pacific Band Directors’ Association” in Japan in 2018. To date, SMU Symphonia has performed in a wide range of performances ranging from university-wide events such as SMU Annual Arts Fest to external gigs with various external parties such as NParks. The band performed Photosymphony at the Botanic Gardens in 2019 to monumental success. Our first online production Homebound was a part of SMU Arts Festival 2020, winning People’s Choice Award. In May of 2021, SMU Symphonia’s string ensemble collaborated with SUTD’s Chamber Ensemble for the online production Alma Mater. For showcasing our culture through an innovative digital performance in the AUN-CA Crosslight Performance Showcase, SMU Symphonia was awarded a certificate of participation by the ASEAN University Network, ASEAN University Network on Culture and the Arts, and the Commission on Higher Education. Meanwhile, Festiva XIV’s rehearsals, recordings, and post-productions were carried out completely online, and to date has garnered 2.5k views. SMU Symphonia’s SMOOJazz production in Arts Fest 2021 also won Best Marketing and Director’s Pick. We wrapped off the year with Symphonia Week, a collection of digital recordings released daily on our Youtube channel and ending with our Christmas Concert. SMU Symphonia strives to emulate the values of Music, Friends, and Fun through their annual productions – “Festiva” and “Grandioso”.

The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO) is Singapore’s first and only fully-independent professional symphony orchestra. With its roots in the acclaimed Singapore Festival Orchestra (SFO), resident orchestra of the Singapore Arts Festival from 2007 to 2012, the MFO was founded in 2013 as the spiritual successor of the SFO. Notable international collaborations include performances with the Korea National Opera, Tan Dun, Kitaro, Paul Anka and Il Divo. First-in-Singapore programmes include the Southeast Asian and Asian premieres of live-to-projection performances of Howard Shore's full soundtrack score to the first 2 movies of the The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy; the Southeast Asian premiere of Disney’s most successful live orchestra concert production – Disney on Classic; collaborations with international pianist Lang Lang and other top Singaporean pop talents as part of the Sing50 mega-concert at the National Stadium; and the wildly-successfully Star Wars & Beyond concert experience at the Marina Bay Sands. The MFO also supports the development of local young music talent through its work as the resident accompanying orchestra of the National Piano & Violin Competition organised by the National Arts Council; and is a partner of INSEAD – The Business School for the World (Asia Campus) in presenting a series of specialised executive training modules, as well as running the MFO's own in-house Sounds of Leadership workshop, all of which use the orchestra as a model of a high performance organisation to impart important concepts such as leadership, communication and collaboration in business organisations.

Singapore Wind Symphony
Since its inception in 1977, the Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) has played a central role in the development of the wind band music scene in Singapore. First established as the National Theatre Symphony Band (NTSB), it was the first amateur Symphonic Band in Singapore comprising musicians from all walks of life, many of whom go on to become music teachers and band instructors in Singapore. The SWS has worked with many locally and internationally renowned conductors and soloists including, Mitsuo Nonami (Japan), Ho Hwee Long (Singapore), Mr. Luk Hoi Yui (China), Hardy Mertens (Netherlands), Jan Van der Roost (Belgium), Satoshi Yagisawa (Japan), Dick Lee (Singapore), Johan De Meij (Netherlands) and Joseph Alessi (USA). The band has also participated in numerous international competitions such as a prestigious World Music Contest in 1992 where it received the Gold award and was the top scorer in the Symphonic Band division, and once again in 2001 when it won the First Prize in the First Division. The band has also represented Singapore internationally at the Janitsjarfestivalen in Hamar, the Conference of the Asia Pacific Band Directors’ Association (APBDA) and has performed in such renowned locations as the Sydney Opera House, the Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts (HKAPA) and the Esplanade Concert Hall. In 2013, the SWS will be featured in the finale concert of the 8th Annual Taiwan International Clinic in Taipei presenting the Asian premiere of Johan De Meij’s Symphony No. 4 “Symphony of Songs” under the baton of the composer. For more than three decades, the SWS has represented the highest level of music making in wind music in Singapore and has earned an international reputation as an ensemble of excellence. Under the leadership of its current Music Director Adrian Tan since 2012, the SWS embarked on the journey to champion and promote the music of Singaporean composers, and extending from that vision, to be an advocate for wind band music by local, Southeast Asian and Asian composers. Since then, the SWS has commissioned and given the world premiere of more than 50 original compositions and arrangements, working with more than 25 local composers. Many of these works have already found their way into the repertoire of local and international school and community bands. Singapore Wind Symphony is a recipient of the National Arts Council’s Major Grant from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2017.
