In 2008, then Secretary Francisco Q. Duque passed the Department of Health Resolution authorizing Asst. Sec. Elmer Punzalan to form a technical working group to evaluate the distribution of Medical Specialists of the Department of Health around the Philippines. With the problem of mal-distribution of Medical Specialists, where they are concentrated in urban centers and that, the Department of Health is very dependent on the private societies, the Department Execom pass a resolution forming the DOH Medical Specialists which is at present time the PHILIPPINE SOCIETY OF MEDICAL SPECIALISTS INC. Yearly we have increasing number of members throughout the Philippines and have embraced the Medical Specialists in the field of Public Health (Municipal Health Officers, Provincial Health Officers, etc.) under the Department of Interior and Local Government. The society is envisioned to promote training and research of all its members including the Seventy-Two (72) Medical Centers distributed throughout the country under the Department of Health, making the institution self-reliant when it comes to the needs of Medical Specialists in every far-flung DOH Hospital.
