The ASCHP is home to community or workplace-based counsellors who work in structured and supervised environments including, but not limited to private Wellness/Counselling Centres or government institutions, schools, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) including Faith Based, Community Based and Not-for-Profit Organisations, the South African Police Service, Counselling Call Centres, Hospitals, Clinics and Support Agencies, Sports Centres, Education and Training facilities, Health and Emergency services and facilities. A nationally recognized professional body ensures consistency in standards across and within provinces in South Africa, and across different counselling contexts. It provides a learning pathway for unqualified counsellors who currently work in a variety of contexts, often in environments where mental health professional such as psychologists and social workers are not necessarily accessible to the majority of the population. Registration of counsellors with a professional body will provide a consistent basis for evaluating and regulating counselling and will ensure greater access to counselling services. Counselling enables one or more people to go through the process of finding solutions to their concerns or difficulties. Counselling may take various forms, including with individuals, couples, families or domestic units and groups. The ASCHP has identified accredited training providers to enable counsellors to gain accredited and applicable qualifications. This will allow counsellors to be recognised and will address current national health and social service priorities. Ideally, qualifying learners will operate under supervision.

Cohering and regulating South Africa’s commercial forensic industry is relevant to all major role-players and stakeholders both interested in and involved in addressing commercial crime and other forms of abuse in the commercial environment. In the last 20 years the commercial environment has changed significantly, it is now characterised by complex business dealings worth staggering amounts of money and increasingly sophisticated systems. These changes continue to introduce new risks as criminals are quick to exploit loop-holes and gaps in latest technologies and systems. Commercial crime (and other exploitation of the commercial environment) results in large-scale losses with millions and even billions being lost. Particular expertise and services have developed to combat new risks, crimes and other types of abuse. It is out of this need that a distinct and recognised line of work has evolved: practitioners who detect and deter commercial crime and other forms of exploitation of commercial systems. This focus or line of work forms the basis of a new industry (the commercial forensic industry) which up to now has been largely undefined and fragmented. Although this line of work is not new, the recognition of a marked out (delineated) and focused industry is a relatively new development. The commercial forensic industry is now recognised both locally and abroad and encompasses a wide range of professionals, each with unique and clearly distinguishable knowledge, skills and experience. Increasingly major role players, at the forefront of developing the necessary expertise and services to combat exploitation of the commercial environment, have recognised the need to build, nurture and regulate the commercial forensic industry (the industry). It is with this in mind, that leading professionals in the industry met in August 2007 to discuss the need to cohere and regulate South Africa’s commercial forensic industry.

South African Transplant Society - Sats

SATS is the voice of professionals working in the field of Transplantation. Following the COVID pandemic and the very successful SATS/SATiBA Congress in November 2022, discussions showed that SATS Congresses would benefit from being in the alternate years, to some of our fellow organisations, to allow optimal attendance. As a result, we are busy planning the 30 th SATS congress for this year 17 – 19 November 2023. With this date now on the horizon, we have as a SATS EXCO, together with Alexia Michaelides, Fiona McCurdie and Event Options planning an exciting meeting. Our theme is: Transplant Teamwork Together and we hope to showcase to each other, what all members of our transplant teams are doing. The scientific committee is currently planning an inclusive interactive programme, including workshops, debates, lectures and abstract presentations, which should appeal to everyone. We are hoping that senior colleagues will also help grow our ‘Transplant Teams’ for the future and bring along junior colleagues, as well as nursing and allied health professionals. Topics include ABOi transplants, kidney-paired donations, Lessons learned from Transplant co-ordinators, and Ethics in Transplantation. The venue is the Graduate School of Business in the V&A Waterfront district in Cape Town which offers state-of-the-art conference facilities, accompanied by beautiful views of Table Mountain. There is onsite Protea Hotel accommodation at the venue, but also other reasonably priced options in the vicinity.
