Naui Asia-Pacific

NAUI Asia-Pacific (formerly NAUI Pacific Rim), since April 1, 2001, is the service center for members of the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) residing in the countries of the Asia-Pacific. NAUI Asia-Pacific was commissioned to distribute and disseminate all the teaching and training material of NAUI Worldwide, associated merchandises, as well as the issuance of certification cards and wall certificates to NAUI-qualified divers. NAUI Asia-Pacific has undertaken the translation and printing of headquarters issued texts and other training materials into regional languages, and will endeavor to make available all major NAUI texts in the major languages of the region. The first such translated works which are now available are the Chinese and Korean versions of the Scuba Diver Textbook and Dive Table, the Scuba Diver Instructor Guide in CD version, NAUI's Standards & Policies and Risk Management and et cetera. NAUI Asia-Pacific also serves as the conduit to consistently improve and upgrade the level of proficiency and efficiency of its members, ensuring that they remain the premier-trained instructors in the sport of recreational diving, with overall responsibility and emphasis on Dive Safety Through Education, the Association's motto.

Penang Swimming Club

Penang Swimming Club is a premier members-only club in Penang nestled along Tanjung Bungah's picturesque coastline. It is the oldest and wealthiest swimming club in Penang. It was founded by Europeans who were passionate about swimming. The early founders were young white men. The club was sited at Tanjung Bungah, which means the "cape of flowers", a name derived from the seaside gardens. Tanjung Bungah was a sleepy fishing community served by a single meandering country road when the Penang Swimming Club was founded on 5 June 1903. At the time, there was no hotel in sight. It was significant that the founders were a group of young Europeans. It was an archaic rule back then that men who went to work in the Far East (mostly fresh out of school) had to be bachelors for the first few years. These young men had nothing much to do after work and besides their natural love of sports, it was said that their womenfolk contrived the idea of exclusive European clubs to prevent their young bucks from straying. The Club they founded by the sea would be something different from the stodgy Penang Club, the intensely esoteric Turf Club, or even the single-sport-orientated Cricket Club. It would be a natural reaction to this island's beaches and irresistible sea. There would be fewer formalities, more casualness, more openness, and generally, more fun. It was perhaps the earliest club in the country devoted exclusively to the pursuit of sea sports against the backdrop of what was then one of Penang's most scenic stretches of coastline. Eventually, the membership became predominantly local. The club has continued to grow both in membership and in facilities throughout the years. Originally focused on sea-related activities (currently swimming, sailing, angling and scuba), it added more land-based activities in the 1990s, including dance sports, tennis, squash, aerobics, darts, tai-chi, yoga, karaoke, taekwondo, tennis along with a well-equipped library and gymnasium.

Sea Divers

Sea Divers Sdn Bhd, founded in 1979, is the first fully dedicated diving establishment in Malaysia. It was and remains the largest dive shop facility in the country, with a combined showroom/training/repair & maintenance space of approximately ft.2, ranking it by far the well-equipped and complete shop of its kind. Its location on the fringe of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle also makes it easily accessible to both local and foreign dive enthusiasts alike. History Sea Divers started dive training at a time when recreational diving was still at its infancy. Most of the dive destinations then were islands on the east coast of West Malaysia, and these were mostly uninhabited. Facilities were mostly non-existent, and novice divers and trainers alike then have to rough it out in tents and procure fresh water supply from little freshwater streams or wells dug by fishermen or kampung folks for emergency needs. Diving equipment then were also rudimentary and, compared to today’s hi-tech versions, seem so archaic. The octopus was as yet unknown/undeveloped, and the buoyancy control devise was just a horse-collar, a far cry from today’s integral ones. The regular snorkel was a rigid ensemble with no flush valve, and the mask was universally rubberized, prone to hardening. There was, of course, no such a thing as technical diving and diving with nitrox mix. Fishing boats masqueraded as dive boats, which took hours to reach dive sites.
