CRESYM is non-profit association, gathering industrial & academic research organisations, and acts transparently for the general interest, addressing new and/or complex, low TRL, technical challenges of the future, fast-evolving European energy system. We foster efficient collaborations on low-TRL R&D issues of general interest; We promote, and rely on, open source principles; We shall maintain useful technological building blocks available for all researchers & engineers (“commons”). We reconcile security and IPRs when developping opensource deliverables. Opensource, non contaminating licences are key to ease the dissemination among operators, manufacturers and vendors in a fair, neutral manner. We organise collaborative, efficient R&D works, with practical intermediary outputs. We build up on, as well as comfort, support and promote other existing opensource initiatives. Our President, resp. Vice-President, are Pr Antonello Monti (RWTH Aachen) and Pr Peter Palensky (TU Delft). Our founding members are 4 research institutions (Fraunhofer Gesellschaft IEE, RWTH Aachen, TU Delft, University of Ljubljana) and 4 companies (ELES, RTE, swissgrid, TenneT).

Expertisecentrum Duurzame Biomassa En Chemie

We are a multidisciplinary research group, dedicated towards sustainable chemistry based on insect and algae biomass and the valorisation of side streams and waste. We perform research and give advice on the cultivation and processing of insects and microalgae and processing waste into new sustainable products. Our microalgae research is done both on lab- and pilot-scale. As a pilot installation we have four closed tubular photobioreactors with a total volume of 4200L. We mainly focus on the sustainability and optimization of cultivation conditions, e.g, like utilization of wastewater, and the recycling of the culture media. The pilot plant reactors are installed in a greenhouse with an elaborate climate control system, so that the possibilities of cultivation of microalgae as innovative crop in horticulture can be examined. The greenhouse and photobioreactors are equipped with specialized measuring devices, so that it is well suited for practice-oriented research. In our insect facility we investigate how the breeding process of different insect species can be optimized. At the moment we have stable colonies of three insect species. Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens), yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), house crickets (Acheta domestic). Apart from breeding optimization and the development of pilot scale production systems we focus on valorisation of organic side streams from industry and agriculture, and the quality and safety during insect breeding. Insects and microalgae contain interesting compounds such as proteins, fats, chitine, pigments, etc, which are valuable resources for applications in many different areas like food, feed and biobased chemicals. Together with different partners, our team also works on extracting these valuable components and finding new markets for these products. We have lab and pilot scaled facilities with analytical labs to process side streams and waste into new products or building blocks for sustainable chemistry.

I-Change

Knowledge Centre Data & Society

Our economy and society increasingly rely on data and AI applications. These innovations highlight technological opportunities. Legal, social and ethical issues are secondary. The Knowledge Center for Data and Society will be the central hub for collecting societal input and channeling it to companies, policy and the general public. In this way, social actors in Flanders can make their mark on local and global research and development around data-driven applications and AI innovations. The Knowledge Center will not only offer practical information on AI and data applications, but will also provide support around legal, ethical and social aspects through the development of toolkits, guidelines and frameworks. For this purpose, the Knowledge Center will gather input from various stakeholders so that the social relevance of their work meets real needs.

Laurelin

LAURELIN is a Horizon 2020-funded research project. Its objectives is to reduce the CO2 hydrogenation limitations by developing new catalyst systems adapted to advanced reaction processes (microwave, magnetic induction and non-thermal plasma) in order to produce green methanol. The green production of methanol can drastically contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the transport sector and contribute to climate change mitigation. The research group MENT, founded in 2014, aims to gain scientific insight in and to promote mental health and wellbeing of (sub)populations. Mental health and wellbeing is understood as a broad concept, which is more than solely the absence of mental health disorders. Everyone’s mental health and wellbeing can be affected in difficult lifetimes: children and adolescents, elderly, immigrants and other minority groups, LGBTs, singles, patients, caregivers, etc. Research is conducted from a public health perspective, starts from a holistic biopsychosocial health/disease model, is transdisciplinary and uses mixed methods.

Stone Assistance

Stone Assistance is a Spin-Off of University of Mons (Belgium) created in order to valorize results of research and development projects undergone in the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering for the stone industry from the extraction of the stone in quarries to its application in civil engineering and patrimonial restoration. Two main activities are offered by Stone Assistance : 1- the physico-mechanical characterization of geomaterials based on unconventional testing methodology on small size samples that are not suitable to perform standard tests. 2- advice to operators in the stone processing to help them optimizing the energy consumption and increasing the productivity by (i) a perfect characterization the intrinsic properties of the materials,(ii) the understanding of the destruction mechanisms with diamonds tools used for rock drilling and cutting and the optimization of the tools the monitoring, the control and the automation of the machines. Stone Assistance is currently working on the development of a testing laboratory equipped with different cutting machines in order to bring his competences to companies which are interested in solving engineering problems and increasing performances on machines used in the stone industry.

Our Mission: Perform, stimulate and support Fibromyalgia research, impacting on diagnosis, treatment and socio-economic status of people diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. FibroRes vzw is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization that facilitates fundamental, translational and socio-economic research on Fibromyalgia. In addition, FibroRes intends to influence policy and strategic (politic) decisions that impact on the daily life, diagnosis and treatment of Fibromyalgia subjects. The organisation was established October 26th 2013 and has its registered office in Ghent, Belgium. Diversity is a key element in the organization, reflected in the experience of the volunteers participating. A great part of the board consists of researchers, albeit in different fields, including medical biotechnology, psychology, medical imaging, nursing and more. Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by widespread pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbance and memory problems among other. It is generally accepted by researchers that the condition Fibromyalgia reflects an amplification of painful sensations through discrepancies arising in the way the brain processes pain signals. However, the cause and molecular mechanisms behind Fibromyalgia is unknown, as well as a proper treatment. The disease can in many persons be so debilitating (read: physical disability) that they cannot work or live a normal social life.
