Horticulture Ugent
Our research focuses on high-tech horticulture. In our group we work on 3 research topics:(1) plant processes under controlled environment and vertical farming,(2) abiotic stress and (3) innovative in vitro breeding. This first research goal focuses on LED light and its influence on plant morphology, alternative soilless production systems and production of high-qualitative secondary metabolites in plants by working with environmental factors. The second aspect on abiotic stress is a topic that remains important in horticulture. Reducing the use of primary resources (energy, water, peat,…) forces growers to look for alternative production schemes, which could have an effect on the plant quality and stress prevalence of the plants. Regarding the third topic, we will use innovative breeding tools to adapt horticultural crops to more abiotic stress conditions, to cultivation in plant factories or to increase its diversity.

Data Analytics Laboratory
The VUB Data Lab is a cross-disciplinary research group the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium. We focus on developing and adapting analytical tools and algorithms which retrieve valuable insights from data. We exploit the connection between data analysis and the properties of complex systems. In doing so, we develop data analysis tools based on information theory, nonlinear dynamics, ergodic theory, and statistical physics. The key technologies we currently focus on are data analytics, pattern mining, machine learning, deep learning, combinatorial optimization and process mining. The lab is headed by prof. Vincent Ginis, prof. Sam Verboven, prof. Filip Van Droogenbroeck, and Prof. Marie-Anne Guerry. We have strong ties with the AI research center, doing interdisciplinary research on Artificial Intelligence, as well as with the Applied Physics research group. The lab performs both fundamental and applied research, always in close collaboration with a wide network of (inter)national academic and industrial partners.

Moxy Eu Horizon
Tangible cultural heritage assets constitute an invaluable and irreplaceable resource of humanity, which are increasingly threatened by contaminants from pollution, vandalism, and fire. Currently available cleaning methods require solvents which can be detrimental to art materials, and harmful to health and the environment. Cleaning with oxygen atoms could provide a breakthrough solution. Experts from plasma physics, heritage science, and conservation from 10 European research organizations, museums, and SMEs, have joined forces in a new Horizon Europe MOXY project (Green Atmospheric Plasma Generated Monoatomic Oxygen Technology for Restoration of the Works of Art), coordinated by the Research Unit for Plasma Technologies RUPT at Ghent University. The project aims to develop a new green cleaning technology, based on monoatomic oxygen to remove contaminants or unwanted organic compounds from past restoration treatments in a non-contact way, without health or environmental concerns. The futuristic concept stems from the work of Bruce Banks and Sharon Miller at NASA and aerospace research, and Horizon Europe awarded the MOXY project with over 4 million Eur grant in the call Green technologies for Cultural Heritage: HORIZON-CL2-2021-HERITAGE-01-01 (grant agreement ID: 101061336) to develop atomic oxygen technology for restoration of tangible cultural heritage in greener, more effective and sustainable way. The MOXY project officially starts with a kick-off meeting in Ghent on Nov 7, 2022, and the project consortium includes Ghent University (Belgium), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), University of Antwerp (Belgium), National Gallery of Denmark (Denmark), Technical University Eindhoven (The Netherlands), University of Pisa Italy), Kompiuterinis Procesu Valdymas (Lithuania), Moderna Museet (Sweden), ICOMOS Lietuva (Lithuania), WeLoop (France).

Society And Ageing Research Lab Sarlab , Vub
The Society and Ageing Research Lab from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) conducts research on “ageing well in the right place” and responds to emerging, critical challenges in policy and practice concerning older people. Our research themes and projects therefore evolve and adapt to the needs of scientific, policy and stakeholder communities. Our current work can be grouped under 3 social-gerontological research themes: ‘social relations and civic engagement', ‘care and caring communities’, and ‘housing and living environment’. The three research lines are underpinned by 4 common values and visions with recurring elements that characterise our research: importance of the neighbourhood, a life course perspective, focus on exclusion, deprivation and inequality, and participatory research frameworks.
