Technoeconomics
Techno-economic research considers technological innovations but assesses them from an economic viewpoint. We analyze the potential that a technology enables, like increased flexibility, improved efficiency, additional possibilities for new and existing customers. We calculate costs (initial investment and operational expenses) as well as (both economic and societal) benefits. Doing so, we can give insight in the overall feasibility of the suggested solutions. Technology choices, investment decisions, operational optimization, targeted market decisions can be supported by our approach. We support decision makers by translating technological innovation into business opportunities. We take up challenges in different application domains. We focus on telecom and data related technologies. Current fields of interest include smart mobility, smart energy, smart cities and smart media. We have a long-standing track record of collaboration with both industrial and academic partners, such as telecom operators, equipment vendors, solution providers, etc. We published over 250 papers in high-ranked journals and international conferences. We have been involved and are currently working in 30+ national as well as international projects.

Transience
TRANSIENCE is a Horizon Europe research project that will undertake a comprehensive characterisation and assessment of circularity principles and measures vis-à-vis decarbonisation, by looking at the twin transition of European industries through the lenses of global competitiveness, innovation, and holistic sustainability. It will then produce MIC3, a consistent, fully open-source model ecosystem to assess industrial circularity, decarbonisation, and sustainability. A series of interoperable modules on the socioeconomic, service and product, material, industrial, energy-system, and environmental perspectives of the transformation of European industry will be developed and integrated, building on and opening the code of leading modelling tools.

Research Group Of Industrial Microbiology And Food Biotechnology
The research of the Research Group of Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (IMDO) deals with the qualitative and quantitative study of the species diversity, community dynamics, and meta-metabolomics of fermented food ecosystems (fermented dairy products, fermented sausages, sourdough, cocoa, coffee, etc.). Further, the genomics, microbial physiology and modelling of fermentations with food-grade microorganisms, i.e. lactic acid bacteria (LAB), acetic acid bacteria (AAB), coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) and yeasts are studied. Also, the human colon fermentation process involving bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, and propionic acid/butyric acid-producing colon bacteria is studied in view of the bifidogenic, butyrogenic and/or propionogenic effects of inulin-type fructans and arabinoxylans. The fundamental aims of these studies are to unravel, by means of state-of-the-art technologies, why certain microorganisms prevail in certain microbial ecosystems and how their competitiveness and functionality in these ecosystems can be explained biochemically and molecularly. The ultimate purpose of these studies is the development of new, functional starter cultures, co-cultures, bio-protective cultures and health-promoting cultures for a controlled and/or steered fermentation process of milk, meat, cereals, cocoa beans, coffee berries, raw vegetables, tropical fruits, sour wort, etc, with respect to food safety, food quality (organoleptic properties such as texture and flavour) and authenticity, and the development of new functional food ingredients (in casu pro- and prebiotics). IMDO occupies a unique position in industrial food biotechnology research in Flanders and abroad in that it possesses the competences to combine field experiments, isolations, identifications, functionality studies and applications in one laboratory facility, which gives the research group a particular competitive advantage and freedom-to-operate.
