Eu-Li-Phe Ca22112
As animal breeding relies on the availability of accurate and specific phenotype data to reach its goals, phenotyping is increasingly being recognised as a limiting factor in all applications of livestock genetics and genomics. The acquisition of relevant phenotypes is also fundamental to routine and daily management of livestock populations in order to optimise reproduction strategies, disease control and welfare of the animals. Consequently, this knowledge gap needs to be filled to facilitate long-term improvement and a sustainable landscape for livestock production. Phenomics is emerging as a major new technical discipline in biology. Phenomics is focused on one major aim: to systematically describe the phenome, referred to as the physical and molecular traits of an organism. This discipline can be defined as the ensemble of methodologies and technologies for the acquisition, analysis and exploitation of high-dimensional phenotypic data on an organism-wide scale. EU-LI-PHE will create a Europe-centred multidisciplinary, interconnected and inclusive community of experts that will enhance scientific collaboration, catalyse developments, and transfer livestock phenomics concepts and applications to improve the sustainability and competitiveness of the European livestock production sector. The Action will provide i) an overview of phenotyping technologies and infrastructures for applications in livestock phenomics, ii) approaches and methods for genome to phenome integration in livestock species, computational resources and data analysis methods needed for this big data discipline, iv) a regulatory framework and a societal vision on livestock phenomics and v) a training environment for the benefit of the next generation of researchers in this field.

Smarthead Innovations
SMARTHEAD INNOVATIONS is a technology-driven & innovation-driven company that researches & develops smart large-area sensor & interfacing technology. Smarthead Innovations holds proprietary IP on sensorized acoustic drum heads & percussion surfaces. Surface-embedded sensors digitize the tension distribution in a membrane and/or the deformation thereof, static as well as dynamic to allow tracking changes thereto over time. The physical state & deformation of a sensorized membrane surface is converted into a digital signal that can be used for any further purpose. We make sense : when applied onto drumheads, the sensorized membrane-surface acts as an 'interface' in interaction with its user/player. The sensors produce a signal related to the state and/or movement of an acoustic drumhead, or another percussion surface. This sensor signal empowers to record vibrations, and/or, tension distribution over the drumhead. The sensor signal enables the detection of drum strike timing, strike type, strike force, & strike position. The sensor signal, or the processed output thereof, can be outputted to peripheral tools & applications for further processing to generate various specific user applications making a smooth connection between the physical, acoustic, and digital. Smarthead sensors are embedded onto a drumhead membrane's surface, without affecting the acoustical properties of the drumhead itself. Their presence can't be heard. Our technology allows inline integration into the overall manufacturing processes of the drumhead on an industrial scale. It is compatible with coatings, and with single-ply to multi-ply drumhead technology and its construction principles, regardless of the make or anatomy of the drumhead. The cost of the applied sensors remains within the cents per unit, offering a viable consumer-good price point.

Alfa Project
The ALFA project, which runs from 2022 to 2025, is an EU-funded project with the objective to increase the adoption of renewable energy sources in the EU by fostering the adoption of technologies using animal waste to produce biogas. Why? A higher share of biogas would lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the lower use of fossil fuels and from improved manure management. Our approach ALFA will try to enhance the market adoption of biogas by supporting livestock farmers overcome existing barriers in different ways, among others:(a) through research, analyzing local challenges and including local stakeholders in co-designing solutions to overcome them;(b) via financial, business, and technical support services and seminars;(c) improving the societal acceptance of biogas facilities amongst citizens through awareness-raising campaigns;(d) by formulating policy recommendations Where? ALFA will deploy its support services to farmers and will conduct its stakeholder consultation activities in 6 EU countries: Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Spain. Who? The ALFA project consists of a shared effort between 10 project partners:(1) Q-PLAN, the project coordinator,(2) APRE,(3) Azzero CO2,(4) FCBD,(5) SIE,(6) CERTH,(7) White Research,(8) PEDAL Consulting,(9) European Dairy Farmers (EDF), and (10) the European Biogas Association (EBA).
