Tsotsos Lab
The Laboratory for Active and Attentive Vision (LAAV) has its roots in the original Computer Vision Laboratory at the University of Toronto founded by John Tsotsos in 1980. In those years it was part of the Artificial Intelligence Group in the Department of Computer Science. There, Tsotsos also founded the Technical Report Series: Research in Biological and Computational Vision (1984 – 1996). In January Tsotsos moved to York University to take up the Directorship of the Centre for Vision Research and a portion of that lab followed him. The history of the current lab thus goes back to 1980 and includes a significant number of students, post-docs and publications from the pre-York era. At York, the Laboratory for Active and Attentive Vision is situated within the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. It is also one of over 35 labs in the much larger Centre for Vision Research (cvr.yorku.ca). The lab has grown steadily over its history now bursting at the seams in rooms 3001 A, B and 3054 in the Lassonde building. With a rich set of international collaborators, and a well-equipped infrastructure the lab is an exciting research focus for interdisciplinary research on human and primate visual attention and active vision for robotics. Research is ongoing within four themes: Refinements and Expansions of the Selective Tuning Model (ST) for Visual Attention; Human Experimental Investigations on the relationship of ST To Biological Vision and Visually-Guided Robotics with application to Aids for the Physically Disabled.

Ubc Data Science Institute
The DSI is a Faculty of Science initiative designed to incubate and accelerate research, innovation and training in data-intensive science. The DSI works to enable the formation of interdisciplinary research teams to advance data science research and to apply new techniques to complex problems faced across domains, including health, science and arts. The DSI provides a collaboration hub to enable inter-faculty interactions on research problems involving large and complex data sets. It also enables organizations outside the university to access the diverse inter-faculty expertise at UBC related to complex data analysis and modelling. To advance this agenda, the DSI: 1) Facilitates the formation of interdisciplinary research teams to advance data research and development. 2) Provides comprehensive training opportunities to data scientists at the post-doctoral level. 3) Serves as an entry-point for partners seeking access to UBC’s world-class expertise in managing, analyzing and leveraging data at scale. 4) Enables a network of researchers, units and organizations to develop collaborative tools and solutions for their data-rich applications.

Ubc Envision Aiche Student Chapter
UBC Envision is the AIChE Student Chapter at the University of British Columbia, originally founded as the UBC Chem-E-Car team. For many years, the team operated with just 5–10 members. In 2015, a surge in interest—driven by stronger recruitment and outreach—sparked rapid growth. A generous donation from the Daniel Family Foundation in 2016 enabled us to expand significantly, launching new student-led projects and providing more hands-on opportunities. With support from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and CHBE faculty, we introduced a junior Chem-E-Car team and projects in flow cells, beer brewing, and biofuels. In 2017, we rebranded as UBC Envision, an umbrella organization that now encompasses a diverse set of engineering design teams. As of 2025, UBC Envision is a thriving, student-run platform for innovation, technical skill-building, and community impact. Our current projects include- Chem-E-Car: Designing and building chemically powered model vehicles for competitions- Green Joule: Developing a fully functional bioreactor system to explore sustainable bioprocessing and renewable production pathways- CRIT (Cosmetic Research and Innovation Team): Researching cosmetic products with a focus on formulation science, performance, and sustainability. UBC Envision empowers undergraduate students to turn bold ideas into real-world engineering solutions, gaining practical experience and contributing to a more sustainable future.

The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE) is a recognized leader in sustainable energy research. WISE connects industry and research partners with 100+ faculty in engineering, environment, science, arts and math and provides access to world-class labs and facilities at the University of Waterloo. The Women’s Health Research Cluster is an international multidisciplinary network of researchers, clinicians, community partners and trainees that work together to advance the health outcomes of women worldwide. Although we use the terms female/male to indicate biological sex, we mainly use women/men to encompass the terms sex and gender. WHY WOMEN’S HEALTH RESEARCH Although advances in sex-and-gender-based research approaches are needed to guide researchers in carrying out inclusive research, many domains of women’s health remain minimally, or not at all, studied. Women’s health research approaches are necessary to understand individual differences between women. There is a critical need to study individual differences across women, and to consider how different physiological (hormonal) experiences (menstruation, pregnancy, menopause) can influence women’s health and treatment and how gendered experiences and expectations may drive some of these differences. VISION We aspire to create a future where women can live equitably healthy lives from birth to old age. MISSION To form a multidisciplinary collaborative network of researchers and stakeholders to promote, expand, and catalyse impactful women’s health research. SHORT-TERM GOALS Establish a network of multidisciplinary researchers and engage women's health stakeholders across disciplines worldwide. Centre For Advanced Building Envelope Research Caber - Carleton University
The Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research (CABER) seeks to improve upon the efficiency and resiliency of building performance, by focusing on the relationship between a building’s envelope and different forms of energy loss. In Canada, residential and commercial buildings direct most of their energy use toward the heating and cooling of indoor space, contributing greatly to the overall greenhouse gas emissions released per year. By improving the performance efficiency of building envelopes, CABER strives to reduce emissions through optimizing all elements separating the climate-controlled indoors and the uncontrolled climate beyond. Drawing upon advances in super-thin insulation materials, prefabricated construction and panelized retrofits, CABER will develop new approaches to constructing building envelopes that are thinner, cheaper, and new methods for renovating existing buildings with less cost and less disruption. This ultimately plays a large role in helping to meet Canada’s climate change goals. Researchers on the CABER team are creating new experimental infrastructure to develop equipment capable of testing full scale residential building facades, as well as creating a materials characterization lab. The new infrastructure will enable researchers to study how heat, air and moisture move through materials and highly insulated wall systems. Focus is being brought to how these elements contribute to occupant health, comfort and building science risks, including condensation, mold growth and rot. CABER’s research, in partnership with Algonquin College and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center, will create innovative opportunities for Canada’s manufacturing, construction and renovation industries, providing new technical solutions to cut heat loss in buildings and reduce the cost associated with net zero ready and deep energy retrofit construction.

The Canada Excellence Research Chair in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing (CERC) program is a transformative research initiative that employs an engaged community partnership approach to expand our understanding, practice, and delivery of health outcomes for all members of our communities. The CERC in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing is led by professor Karen Soldatic. Collaborating closely with a network of health-care institutions, service providers, and civil society organizations, the program aims for a paradigm shift – one that challenges a siloed, expert-driven approach to health and well-being and moves instead towards a community-engaged, preventative model of well-being. Uniquely applying a critical disability lens, the research program aims to not only reduce health disparities that are inextricable from their social contexts, but to embed community knowledge into health-care institutions, systems and models of delivery. The CERC program is known worldwide as one of the most prestigious of its kind. This $8-million, eight-year program is funded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat on behalf of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
