Carla Catalysis Research Laboratory
CaRLa (the Catalysis Research Laboratory) is a joint initiative between Heidelberg University and BASF. Since 2006, we've worked side-by-side in Heidelberg, combining curiosity-driven research with real-world application. Our mission is to develop new solutions in homogeneous catalysis that pave the way for more sustainable, efficient chemistry. At CaRLa, academic and industrial scientists work under one roof, sharing perspectives from both worlds. Our lab is fully integrated within the Chemistry Department at the University of Heidelberg, creating a unique environment where academic and industrial collaboration happens naturally. This approach accelerates the transfer of ideas from basic science to new processes that matter outside the lab, especially in industry. We're a diverse, international team of postdocs and students tackling long-term challenges together. Our research focuses on problems at the interface of chemistry and industry: from developing catalysts that enable more efficient use of resources, to new pathways for chemical recycling and sustainable production. We contribute to a future where chemistry is innovative, responsible, and impactful. Since our founding, our work has led to over a hundred scientific publications and numerous patents. Feel free to connect, follow our journey, and reach out if you're interested in working with us. We believe that meaningful science starts with good conversations.
