For more than 20 years, AIP has proven research competence in the design, planning, and control of industrial production and logistics systems. Our mission statement is technology and decision-oriented business economics. Here we model processes and systems according to the problems under consideration. On this basis, we develop decision support models which we apply in industry and politics to derive recommendations for appropriate activities. In interdisciplinary teams, challenging questions are often dealt with directly on site and in a practice-oriented manner. Our research addresses the classic production and logistics management. The spectrum of our research ranges from production, logistics, and supply chain management to environmental protection. Our research is enhanced in the four areas „Energy“,"Digitization","Mobility", and "Resources". In these areas, we develop innovative solutions for current problems, derive applicable suggestions for improvement, and support their implementation. In numerous research projects, we work together with national and international partners from academia and industry, often with the involvement of public funding organizations such as the German Research Foundation (DFG) and various federal ministries. The aim is to transfer sophisticated theoretical work into industrial applications. To this end, the Chair cooperates with companies from a wide range of sectors and sizes, from local recycling companies to global partners from the automotive and steel industries. The results are also reflected in a large number of publications in leading international journals. We also contribute our strengths to the active design of various research centers.

The Munich Center for Space Communications is one of Germany’s largest and most versatile research facilities for true over-the-air testing of satellite and space communications equipment and technologies. Hosted by the Chair of Signal Processing, this manufacturer independent facility at the Campus of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich comprises a powerful satellite ground station with multiple antennas covering the UHF, C, X, Ku- and Ka-band. With different satellite capacities from our partners, the Munich Center for Space Communications provides end-to-end over-the-air satellite communications test and measurement capabilities. The Center is split up into a governmental test and verification range called Bundeswehr SATCOM Center for Evaluation, Research & Test (SatCERTBw) and the Munich SpaceCom Labs, an independent research facility for satellite and space communications that is fully open to the public research community. The Professorship of Composites and Material Compounds (PVW) at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IWW) in Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC), Germany has been at the forefront of this field for several decades. With its specialized laboratories and cutting-edge facilities, PVW has been instrumental in achieving various national and international R&D innovative projects. The AICOR Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI) investigates methods for cognition-enabled robot control. The research is at the intersection of robotics and Artificial Intelligence and includes methods for intelligent perception, dexterous object manipulation, plan-based robot control, machine learning and knowledge representation for robots. Robots performing complex tasks in open domains, such as assisting humans in a household or collaboratively assembling products in a factory, need to have cognitive capabilities for interpreting their sensor data, understanding scenes, selecting and parameterizing their actions, recognizing and handling failures and interacting with humans. In our research, we are developing solutions for these kinds of issues and implement and test them on the robots in our laboratory. A particular focus of the group is on the integration of individual methods into complete cognition-enabled robot control systems and the release of the developed software as open-source libraries.

Anfang April 2019 wurde an der Technischen Hochschule Ingolstadt die Artificial Intelligence Network Ingolstadt gGmbH (AININ) gegründet. Mit AININ haben sich sieben Partner aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zusammengeschlossen, um zukunftsweisende Themen aus den Bereichen Künstliche Intelligenz und Maschinelles Lernen zu erforschen. AININ verfolgt den Anspruch, die generierten Forschungsergebnisse in gesellschaftlich relevante Produkte bzw. Produktionsmethoden sowie im Anschluss auch in Unternehmensgründungen zu überführen. Durch die Grundlagenforschung werden darüber hinaus auch die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen der KI-Technologien untersucht und im Rahmen von Transferaktivitäten für die Öffentlichkeit nutzbar gemacht. AININ beschäftigt sich mit Forschungsfragen zum KI-Einsatz in den vier Bereichen Handel, Gesundheit, Produktion und Mobilität. Die verschiedenen Perspektiven aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, die dabei zusammenkommen, sollen kreative und interdisziplinäre Ansätze fördern und KI-Lösungen aus einem Themenbereich auch schnell auf andere Bereiche übertragbar machen.
