Institute Of Jet Propulsion And Turbomachinery Ist - Rwth Aachen University
The Institute for Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery is active in numerous research areas. In addition to classical turbomachinery, innovative energy conversion systems such as low-sound, hybrid-electric aircraft propulsion systems are researched and developed. Modern, electrified aviation propulsion systems and innovative energy carriers such as hydrogen and synthetic fuels will enable emission-free aviation in the future. To this end, the IST is researching innovative energy conversion systems for aircraft of various size classes. In order to achieve broad acceptance for urban and regional air mobility among the population, freedom from noise as well as from emissions must be ensured. The IST is therefore developing, designing and testing quiet propulsors for these air cabs. As MTU Aero Engines' center of competence for compressors, the IST is conducting research work on an axial-flow compressor for modern aircraft engines. This offers the opportunity to investigate current research topics on an application-oriented test vehicle. In the field of centrifugal compressors, the IST is conducting research on industrial and engine applications. In addition, a test stand for a fuel cell centrifugal compressor is being built. The IST has a great deal of experience in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of flow measurement equipment. In addition, static calibrations for pressure and temperature as well as dynamic calibrations in the free-jet calibration channel are carried out at the institute. Complex flow phenomena are investigated by means of numerical simulations. The IST contributes to the development of innovative CFD methods by developing numerical concepts and validating these methods. The teaching and research area of space propulsion deals with scientific fundamentals and new technologies for application in future rocket propulsion systems.

IntellIoT is Pan-European Research project supported by the European Commission with €8 million EU funding. It fosters the development of humanized IoT and AI devices and systems. It comprises a consortium of 13 partners spread across 9 countries: Siemens AG, EURECOM, Aalborg University, University of Oulu, TTControl GmbH, Telecommunication Systems Institute, Technical University of Crete, Philips, Sphynx Analytics Ltd, University of St. Gallen, Holo-Industrie 4.0 Software GmbH, AVL Commercial Driveline & Tractor Engineering GmbH, Startup Colors UG as well as University General Hospital of Heraklion. The initiative aims to facilitate a competitive ecosystem and to strengthen the European market in finding deeptech solutions applicable in healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, energy, construction, and smart city. Enabling technologies such as 5G, cybersecurity, distributed technology, Augmented Reality and tactile internet, the project champions end-user trust, adequate security and privacy by design. In the upcoming 3 years, IntellIoT will also support SMEs and startups in Europe with funding and access to technology per pilot projects executed in collaboration with the IntellIoT consortia partners.

Members of IWMA act as representatives in a number of expert and working groups as well as technical committees such as the CEN/TC 191/WG 10 (EN 14972), NFPA 750, NFPA 25, VdS Guidelines 3188, IMO (International Maritime Organization) and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency of the European Commission). Our main goal: fire safety based on competency to save lives, assets and jobs. The technology uses less water and is therefore a sustainable and green technology! Das Institut für Sozialinnovation (ISInova) verfolgt das Ziel, soziale Innovationen zu erforschen und zu fördern. Unter sozialen Innovationen werden von Routinen abweichende, neuartige und mehr als nur geringfügige Verhaltensregelungen und Verfahrensabläufe verstanden, die überall in der Gesellschaft vorkommen können und nachhaltige gesellschaftliche Veränderungen mit sich bringen. Das Institut, das im Jahr gegründet wurde, dient als institutionalisiertes Forum zur Erforschung und Vermittlung der gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung sozialer Innovationen. Es verbindet den Forschungsprozess eng mit dem Beratungsprozess. Der Erwerb neuen Wissens bei der Entdeckung neuer Organisations- und Praxisformen wird als beratende Intervention aufgefasst. ISInova finanziert sich über Projektmittel von Auftraggebern aus öffentlichen und gemeinnützigen Einrichtungen, Organisationen und Privatunternehmen sowie Mitgliedsbeiträgen. Aus dem Verein heraus wurde 2018 eine gemeinnützige Unternehmensgesellschaft gegründet zur Abwicklung von Forschungsprojekten. Wir sind eine interdisziplinäre Nachwuchsforschungsgruppe aus Hydro, Öko- und Tech-WissenschaftlerInnen mit Sitz an der TU Braunschweig. Unsere Mission geht über die reine Forschung hinaus: Unser Gruppenleiter, Dr. Mathias Beyer, sieht es als seine Pflicht, junge Wissenschaftler nicht nur in Methoden, sondern auch in der Entwicklung ihrer Werte zu starken Persönlichkeiten zu fördern. Ein wichtiges Kernkonzept unserer Arbeit ist: Wir Menschen sind und keine Forschungsmaschinen. Wir suchen das Glück im Prozess, und innovative Forschung ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil davon. Dem Wasser auf der Spur: von deutschen Stadtbäumen, über heimische Wälder bis hin zum Trockenwald in Costa Rica. Unsere Arbeit konzentriert sich darauf, die Geheimnisse der Wasserflüsse in den Bäumen vielfältigster Ökosysteme der Welt zu entschlüsseln. Wir erforschen den gesamten Weg des Wassers: von der Atmosphäre in den Boden, von dort ins Grundwasser, durch die Pflanzen, bis zur Rückführung in die Atmosphäre und in Flüsse. Mithilfe unserer Forschung wollen wir dazu beitragen, die Wälder, vor allem in Deutschland, resilienter dem Klimawandel gegenüber zu gestalten und somit zukunftsfähig zu machen. Dafür setzen wir auf hochmoderne, von uns weiterentwickelte Ansätze: • In-situ-Messungen stabiler Isotopen: Unser Spezialgebiet für die Analyse von Wasserquellen und -transportprozessen. • UAV/Drohnen-Technologie: Für hochauflösende Thermal- und Multispektraldatenerfassung sowie unsere eigens entwickelte “Isodrone“ zur gezielten Astprobenahme in schwer zugänglichen, hohen oder kranken Bäumen. In vielfältigen Forschungsprojekten leisten wir wegweisende Beiträge zur Hydrologie und tragen so zu einem tieferen Verständnis unseres Planeten bei. Interessiert an einer Zusammenarbeit? Daneben betreiben wir eine Außenstelle in Juliusruh auf Rügen und beteiligen uns maßgeblich am ALOMAR-Observatorium in Nordnorwegen. Unser Institut, an dem aktuell rund 70 Personen arbeiten und forschen, gibt es mittlerweile seit 30 Jahren. Derzeit wird das IAP zudem im Exzellenz-Projekt AIR-MoPSy im Rahmen des EFRE Programms 2021 bis 2027 des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aus Mitteln des Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung der Europäischen Union gefördert.

Materials Systems of the Future The vision of the Cluster of Excellence Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS) is to combine the best of two worlds – nature and technology. livMatS develops novel, bioinspired materials systems, which adapt autonomously to their environment and harvest clean energy from it. The purely technical, but behaviorally quasi-live materials systems meet people's demands for future-oriented environmental and energy technologies. Research into the acceptance and social relevance of these autonomous systems and their sustainability are thus important components of development.
