Die AG Commercial Transport stellt sich Fragen aus den Bereichen Automatisierung des Güterverkehrs sowie der Ver- und Entsorgung periurbaner Räume, entwickelt Transportkonzepte für den Güterverkehr und begleitet Unternehmen bei der Elektrifizierung ihrer Nutzfahrzeug-Flotten. Die AG Rail erarbeitet für und mit Bahnunternehmen, Infrastrukturbetreibern, Herstellern von Schienenfahrzeugen und Logistikdienstleistern Forschungsthemen aus den Bereichen Digitalisierung, Automatisierung, Safety & Security, Umwelt & Energie sowie Lebenszyklusmanagement. Themen der Automatisierung im Rail-Sektor sind das automatisierte Fahren, der Umschlag von Gütern sowie die Vernetzung. Im Bereich der People Mobility werden z.B. Lösungen für den Ausbau des ÖPNV, die Anbindung des ländlichen Raums, die Gestaltung urbaner Räume und die Sicherheit des Verkehrs erarbeitet sowie intelligente Verkehrssteuerungssysteme und Ticketing-Systeme entwickelt. The Research Training group GRK 2376 determines how the nature of a confining environment like geometry, surface texture and surface chemistry affects the transition states and pathways of chemical reactions. This scientific approach is addressed by researchers from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Technische Universität Dortmund, Universität Duisburg-Essen and collaborating partners from University of California, Berkeley. Their complementary scientific expertise enables to combine theoretical models and state-of-the-art experiments in synthesis, spectroscopy and surface science. Thus, the collaborative research will contribute to the fundamental understanding of confinement-controlled reactions.

We are a research-driven hub for applied AI that aims to enable the efficient and agile development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) assets across the whole Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest research organisation. Helmholtz AI (which is short for Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation unit) is structured as a hub-and-spoke model with six units across the Helmholtz Association. Our headquarter is hosted by the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) and we have local units at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Representing the six research fields of the Helmholtz Association, our units host Research Groups and consultant teams. They are at the heart of our activities and ensure wide dissemination of methods as well as broad uptake of data-based research questions in applied AI. Launched in March 2019 and led by Professor Fabian Theis (Helmholtz Zentrum München), our ambition is to tackle the major challenges and pressing issues facing society and develop sustainable solutions for tomorrow and beyond with newly developed AI/ML-based tools, offering democratized access to them in an open and dynamic community.

The Human-Centered AI Lab, headed by Prof. Dr. Hanna Drimalla, is dedicated to the automatic analysis of social interaction signals (e.g, facial expression, gaze behavior, voice etc.) using machine learning as well as speech and image processing. Three aspects are the focus of our research: the detection of positive and negative affect, the measurement of stress, and the analysis of social interaction patterns. All three have in common that they are multimodal and time-dependent phenomena. To address this complexity, we collect innovative training data and develop novel analysis methods.
