Systems Immunology Dkfz
The progression and clinical outcome of human cancer are influenced by cellular interactions in the tissue microenvironment. Our lab strives to understand how such interactions influence the behavior of the human immune system. Specifically, we are studying how metabolic interactions between T cells, macrophages, and tumor cells determine immune function and tumor progression. We employ a novel proteomic imaging technology termed multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI) to address these questions. MIBI enables the simultaneous quantification of more than 40 proteins and their spatial localization directly in human tissues. We have established the MIBI technology at the DKFZ and have set up all necessary experimental and analytical workflows. Now, we are using these workflows to analyze the metabolic regulation of human immune cells in clinical tissues. In addition, we are conducting functional studies on the relevance of metabolic pathways using genetic manipulation and human organoid cultures. In short, our research combines: Systems Immunology: Analysis of the immune system in human tissues via multiplexed imaging. Together with clinicians, we profile human tissue samples from clinical trials focusing on cancer, inflammation/autoimmunity, and cardiovascular disease. Single-Cell Biology: We develop experimental tools to study novel aspects of cell biology on the single-cell level, for example, the connection between metabolic reprogramming and epigenetic modifications. Computational Biology: In collaboration with computational scientists, we apply machine learning approaches that utilize the single-cell and subcellular nature of our high-dimensional imaging datasets. Our lab aims to advance our understanding of the interactions between the immune system and the local tissue structure and thus contribute to future improvements in human cancer immunotherapy.

Wireless Plasticity For Massive Heterogeneous Computer Architectures Wiplash
This is the official page of WiPLASH project which aims to pioneer an on-chip wireless communication plane able to provide architectural plasticity, reconfigurability and adaptation to the application requirements with near-ASIC efficiency but without loss of generality. For this, the WiPLASH consortium will provide solid experimental foundations of the key enablers of on-chip wireless communication at the functional unit level as well as their technological and architectural integration. The main goals are to- Prototype a miniaturized and tunable graphene antenna in the terahertz band- Co-integrate graphene RF components with submillimeter-wave transceivers- Demonstrate low-power reconfigurable wireless chip-scale networks. The culminating goal is to demonstrate that the wireless plane offers the plasticity required by future computing platforms by improving at least one key application (mainly biologically-plausible deep learning architectures) by 10× in terms of execution speed and energy-delay product over a state-of-the-art baseline.

Das Zentrum Technik und Gesellschaft (ZTG) ist eine Einrichtung der TU Berlin, die etabliert wurde, um Forschung jenseits disziplinärer Grenzen zu realisieren. Das ZTG greift aktuelle gesellschaftliche Probleme und Themen im Spannungsfeld Technik und Gesellschaft auf und bearbeitet diese gemeinsam mit Wissenschaftler*innen verschiedener Disziplinen und relevanten Praxisakteuren, z. B. aus der Zivilgesellschaft, Wirtschaft oder staatlichen Institutionen. Durch die inter- und transdisziplinäre Perspektive werden die sozialen, rechtlichen, ökonomischen und nutzerspezifischen Belange von Anfang an in Innovations- und Transformationsprozesse integriert und so technologische und planerische Gestaltungsprozesse auf eine breitere Basis gestellt. Aufgrund seiner jahrelangen Erfahrung in der Durchführung derartiger Projekte hat sich das ZTG zu einem Kompetenzzentrum für Methoden inter- und transdisziplinärer Forschung entwickelt. 2016 feierte das ZTG sein 20-jähriges Bestehen. Die vielfältige Forschungstätigkeit des ZTG bildet sich in der Bereichsstruktur ab. Sechs thematische Forschungsbereiche, in denen wir verschiedene Handlungsfelder erforschen, werden durch drei Querschnittsbereiche vervollständigt, die unsere sozialwissenschaftliche Perspektive verdeutlichen.
