Center For Wind And Earthquake Engineering
The center for wind and earthquake engineering (CWE) is a competence center of RWTH Aachen University. As structural engineers from different fields of expertise, we handle all present kinds of stochastic or harmonic loading, model the structural transfer and predict expectable responses. This is especially relevant for natural loadings like wind or earthquake. We have the necessary experimental and numerical tools for research and specific problems that may come up during the design process of buildings.

Centre For Individualised Infection Medicine
The CiiM (Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine) is a joint venture of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and the Hannover Medical School (MHH). The activities located at the CiiM will investigate the influence of individual patient and pathogen conditions on susceptibility to infection, disease progression and therapeutic success. The aim is to optimize individual patient care. The realization of this vision requires an interdisciplinary, patient-oriented bundling of different departments from clinic and research. The construction of our own CiiM building in the direct vicinity of the MHH and other research facilities of the biomedicine location Hannover plays a key role in this. This federal investment through the Helmholtz Association and the State of Lower Saxony will also be a focal point for future investments and industrial cooperation.

Chair Of Materials Chemistry Mch - Rwth Aachen University
The Chair of Materials Chemistry (MCh) was established in 2002 and is led by Prof. Jochen M. Schneider. The Chair was actually founded in 1960 as Chair for Metallurgy of Nuclear Fuels and Theoretical Metallurgy, led by Prof. Otmar Knacke. From 1987 onwards, Prof. Dieter Neuschütz was head of the then-renamed Chair of Theoretical Metallurgy. In 2002, Prof. Jochen Schneider took over and shifted the scope from metallurgy to materials design. The newly entitled Chair for Materials Chemistry currently consists of around 20 scientific employees, electrical and mechanical workshops, and a management office. At Materials Chemistry we design materials for application in harsh environments such as during metal cutting or energy conversion. Our research philosophy is knowledge-based materials design combining experiments with atomistic calculations. We mostly deal with thin films which we produce by sputtering or cathodic arc deposition, both in the laboratory and industrial coating chambers. We are equipped with basic characterization techniques for chemical composition, structure, microstructure, mechanical, and electrical properties. We are also hosting advanced characterization techniques such as Atom Probe Tomography. Finally, our knowledge-based approach involves quantum mechanical calculations which are performed on the supercomputers installed at the RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Aside from research, we are also involved in teaching at the BSc and MSc levels. Visit our webpage for more information on basic and advanced courses offered.

Ellis Unit Jena
ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory. Founded in 2018, ELLIS has grown into a network that counts 43 ELLIS units at world-class institutions in 17 countries, 16 ELLIS programs and a pan-European PhD program. The members of ELLIS are committed to shaping the future of AI in Europe by pushing the scientific and technological boundaries for human-centered, beneficial and safe AI. The ELLIS unit Jena is involving the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) Jena, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) and the Institute of Data Science of the German Aerospace Center (DLR IDW) at the interface between climate/environmental science and machine learning with an emphasis on scientific knowledge integration in and knowledge generation from machine learning approaches. The goal of the ELLIS Unit Jena is thus to combine fundamental development in machine learning with challenges concerning spatio-temporal environmental and climate dynamics for a better understanding of the Earth system and its components. An important aspect here is the integration of knowledge into machine learning methods as appropriate assumptions – this can be qualitative knowledge about causal relationships („causal modeling“) or quantitative knowledge about functional relationships, which can be „cast“ into physical, chemical, biological or geo-ecological formulas („hybrid modeling”). The ELLIS unit Jena will also strive to help AI to best serve sustainable development via links to politics, business and civil society.
