Global Wetland Center

The Global Wetland Center investigates wetlands' potential for figthing global climate change. It is established by University of Copenhagen, DHI A/S, and GEUS and is supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation for a period of 6 years (2024-2029). The scientific activities have kicked off on 1st of January 2024. Brief Scientific description: Wetlands contain large amounts of carbon. Wetlands around the globe are under pressure and have been drained for agricultural use, which has caused this carbon to be released as carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas. Protecting and managing wetlands can help to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. However, rewetting of these areas also enhances emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, two other greenhouse gases. In the Global Wetland Center, we will use a combination of field observations and experiments, modelling, satellite-based observations and technologies based on AI to understand the interactions between hydrology and biogeochemistry at a global scale. We will develop novel models to quantify the greenhouse gas balances, and contribute to developing management strategies that can decrease the emission of greenhouse gases from wetlands, thereby supporting a global shift towards climate neutrality.

Knøfler, PhD-student Sophie Nordkild, MD/PhD-student Diana Elena Renteria Ramirez, Post-Doc Lauge MIkkelsen, Post-Doc Hasan Ahmad Al-Saffar, Researcher Lærke Wolf Andreasen, Medical Student (Master Thesis) Stinna Schnabl, Medical Student (Master Thesis) Sebastian Rasmussen, Medical Student (Bachelor Thesis) Main research areas • De novo malignancies in liver transplant recipients • Randomized controlled trials investigating minimally invasive treatment for liver tumors • Epidemiological aspects of hepatocellular carcinoma, liver metastases and cholangiocarcinoma in surgical patients • Genomic, transcriptomic, immunohistochemical and radiomic biomarkers in surgical patients with hepatocellular carcinoma Patients undergoing liver surgery represent a diverse group undergoing complicated surgical procedures with a high risk of complication. In addition, patients undergoing liver surgery for the most common indications, hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal liver metastases, have a recurrence rate of more than 50%. Thus, for some patients the advantages of the treatment are outweighed by the disadvantages. However, treatments are currently not selected based on prognostic features or individualized to the specific patient. A personalized treatment approach may overcome these limitations. Firstly, biomarkers may improve the selection of patients with favourable prognostic features. Secondly, minimally invasive techniques may reduce complications. Thirdly, high-risk patients may undergo screening to allow identification of cancers at an early stage. In the research group, we aim to provide important knowledge to establish personalized treatment in patients undergoing liver surgery.

Research Unit For Plastic Surgery And Burns Treatment, Rigshospitalet

We conduct research across breast reconstruction, registry-based skin cancer studies, and burn treatment, using a combined methodological approach of randomized clinical trials, national registry research, and translational laboratory studies. Within breast reconstruction, our research covers a wide range of projects. This includes randomized trials such as the BREAST-AB study, as well as investigations into implant safety — looking at silicone migration, the implant microbiome, and their role in the development of capsular contracture. We also work with large clinical databases to study long-term surgical outcomes, and we examine patient-reported measures such as quality of life following reconstruction. In skin cancer, we use nationwide health registries to examine incidence, risk factors, diagnostic pathways, prognostic differences, and treatment outcomes across both common and rare tumor types. Our aim is to strengthen individualized follow-up and clinical decision-making. In burn treatment and scar management, our research includes translational studies on biological mechanisms, as well as clinical evaluation of novel therapies such as stem-cell–based interventions to improve scar quality and reduce symptoms in patients with chronic burn scars. Across all areas, our goal is to generate robust, clinically relevant evidence that can guide surgical practice, improve patient outcomes, and support the development of future national and international guidelines in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Pig-Paradigm

PIG-PARADIGM is an international, cross-institutional and interdisciplinary AMR (antimicrobial resistance) project. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming one of the greatest global health threats, and the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials are accelerating the spread of AMR. In the pig production industry, a major part of antibiotic usage is related to treatment of enteric infections. Now with DKK 150 million (€20.1 million) of funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, PIG-PARADIGM has brought together scientists from Denmark, the Netherlands, and the United States, aiming to improve intestinal robustness and resilience in developing piglets by advancing fundamental knowledge of the pig gut microbiome and its interaction with nutrition and the host. New knowledge on how to strengthen piglets’ natural defense will form the basis for the development of industrial solutions in commercial pig production. These strategies will curtail the dependence on antibiotics, thereby contributing to the global effort to mitigate antimicrobial resistance. The reduction in antibiotic usage not only aligns with responsible farming practices but also enhances the image of animal agriculture.
