منذ إنشاء هيئة المواد النووية عام 1977 وهي تباشر اختصاصاتها التي خولها لها قانون إنشائها في استكمال الأنشطة التي بدأها قسم الجيولوجيا والخامات الذرية والذي كان جزءاً من هيئة الطاقة الذرية حيث أنشئ عام 1955م. وتختص بالبحث والتنقيب واستكشاف واستخراج المواد النووية دون غيرها، كما تختص بمعالجة واستخلاص المواد النووية من خاماتها وتصنيعها وتصديرها أو استيرادها. ويقع المقر الرئيسي لهيئة المواد النووية بالقطامية، ويوجد لها مقر آخر بأنشاص كما يوجد للهيئة سبعة مراكز حقلية تغطي جميع المناطق الجغرافية بالصحراوات المصرية والمتعلقة بمجالات عمل الهيئة. وفي إطار ذلك تتركز أنشطة الهيئة حول العديد من المجالات البحثية والعلمية والإنتاجية والتكنولوجيا مثل: اقتراح السياسات العامة ووضع الخطط في مجال البحوث والدراسات للكشف والتنقيب عن المواد النووية وتنظيم تداولها وإجراء عمليات المسح الشامل لتحديد المناطق ذات الإمكانيات في الخامات الذرية. تدريب وإعداد الكوادر البشرية والعلمية المتخصصة في مجالات عمل الهيئة. إيفاد المنح التدريبية والبعثات بالتنسيق مع إدارة البعثات بوزارة التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي والجهات المعنية الأخرى. التنسيق مع الجامعات والمعاهد والهيئات والمراكز البحثية في الموضوعات ذات الاهتمام المشترك مثل التسجيلات العلمية (دبلوم – ماجستير – دكتوراه) والمشروعات البحثية والتدريبية. العمل على تطبيق سياسة الدولة بضرورة الاستفادة من البحوث العلمية في المجالات التطبيقية لخدمة أهداف التنمية والمشروعات القومية والبحثية والبيئية. وتنتهج الهيئة في سبيل تحقيق أهدافها الأساليب العلمية الحديثة في الدراسات والأبحاث التي تقوم بها في المجالات الجيولوجية والجيوفيزيائية (الأرضية والجوية) والجيوكيميائية، وكذلك التحاليل الكيميائية والدراسات المعدنية والبيئية والإشعاعية وغيرها. تتكون الهيئة من (5) قطاعات رئيسية منها (4) قطاعات علمية تضم السادة أعضاء هيئة البحوث (أساتذة – أساتذة مساعدين – مدرسين – مدرسين مساعدين – معيدين) والسادة شاغلي الوظائف الفنية والإدارية والمعاونة وقطاع الشئون المالية والإدارية، بالإضافة إلى عدد من الإدارات العامة والإدارات المتخصصة. وتعتبر أنشــاص المقر الأول لهيئة المواد النووية منذ انشائها عام 1977 حيث كانت تضم قطاعات الأنتاج والبحوث بأقســامهم العلمية الم
