Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute Inb

The Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (‘Instituto Nacional de Bioinformática’ - INB), founded in 2003 with a decentralized model, is the bioinformatics technology platform of the Carlos Health Institute (‘Instituto de Salud Carlos - since January 2018. Currently, the INB is a network of 19 nodes located at 12 different research institutions and is coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). Its central node coordinates the interactions of the INB nodes within the network and beyond. The two main overarching objectives are maintaining and increasing the alignment of the INB with ELIXIR (European Life Science Infrastructure for Biological Information) looking for deeper synergies, while increasing the translational capacity of the INB towards the Spanish National Health System (SNS). The INB serves in the coordination, integration and development of Spanish bioinformatics resources in projects in the areas of genomics, proteomics and translational medicine. It has contributed to the creation of a consistent computational infrastructure in the area of bioinformatics, participated in national and international genome projects, and trained bioinformatics users and developers. The INB is in a strategic position as an interface between developments at the national and international level by research centers, initiatives such as the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH), and organizations such as ELIXIR, and bioinformatic groups directly related to clinical practice. Spain is member of ELIXIR since 2015, with the INB as the Spanish national node. Within ELIXIR, the INB is responsible for the bioinformatics infrastructure offered by Spain, and therefore, should guarantee its alignment to the strategic areas put forward by ELIXIR.

Vigo Quantum Communication Center

The Vigo Quantum Communication Center (VQCC) at the University of Vigo aims to become a world leading research institute in the understanding and development of quantum communication technologies, which will represent a principal driver of the future telecom industry. We intend to attract world-class scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students in physics, engineering, mathematics and computer science to Spain, to address key fundamental scientific problems at the forefront of quantum communication and the important applications therein, in a collegial, collaborative, and motivating environment. A principal goal of VQCC is to promote the education of a quantum workforce of PhD students and young scientists in a truly international research atmosphere, by providing them with outstanding training opportunities through hands-on research projects, specialized courses and seminars, and access to experimental infrastructures at the highest international level; all this guided by international leading experts in the field. We also aim to build strong long-lasting partnerships, via a collaborative interdisciplinary approach, with strategically selected industry, universities, technological centers, and the public sector, to translate scientific findings and expertise into the development of novel quantum technologies for practical applications in data security in the quantum era.

Aprisco

EN The Aprisco Experimental Station combines research and education in agroecology. Located in the heart of Monfragüe National Park, in northern Extremadura, it has a 150-hectare farm, as well as an experimental garden with 1,520 small plots and a fully equipped field laboratory for evaluating plants, soils and climate. The Station conducts research on the diversification of agricultural systems and hosts long-term experiments, such as the Crop Diversity Experiment and the monitoring of 50 hectares of dehesa. It collaborates with various academic institutions, which it provides with access to the farm and facilities to research a wide range of aspects of the ecosystem it hosts. It also participates in regional and EU projects, such as COUSIN and LegumES. It is coordinated by Asociación Aprisco, which also coordinates the Living Lab of Farmland Biodiversity for Rural Wellbeing- ES La Estación Experimental Aprisco aúna investigación y educación en agroecología. Ubicada en el corazón del Parque Nacional de Monfragüe, en el norte de Extremadura, cuenta con una finca de 150 hectáreas, además de un jardín experimental con 1520 pequeñas parcelas y un laboratorio de campo totalmente equipado para la evaluación de plantas, suelos y clima. La Estación lleva a cabo investigaciones sobre la diversificación de los sistemas agrícolas y alberga experimentos a largo plazo, como el Experimento de Diversidad de Cultivos y el seguimiento de 50 hectáreas de dehesa, colaborando con distintas entidades académicas, a las que facilita el acceso al terreno para investigar aspectos muy diversos del ecosistema que alberga. Además, forma parte de proyectos regionales y de la UE, como COUSIN y LegumES. Está coordinada por la Asociación Aprisco, que también coordina el Living Lab of Farmland Biodiversity for Rural Wellbeing.

Arcovkids

El proyecto #ArCovKids es un ejemplo de Ciencia Ciudadana orientado a la resolución de retos sociales del siglo XXI. Su objetivo principal consiste en el diseño de un nuevo espacio para la experiencia infantil de la Covid-19, que combina la creación de un archivo digital de acceso abierto y una comunidad de usuarios de investigación multidisciplinar, con la participación activa de la ciudadanía. En el futuro inmediato,#ArCovKids incluirá actividades de transferencia y de divulgación, como la realización de una exposición sobre el tema y la ejecución de ciclos de conferencias y workshops. Nuestra plataforma digital permitirá disponer de material de investigación sobre los impactos emocionales, sociales, económicos, políticos y culturales de la Covid-19 en la vida familiar, y en particular, en el mundo de los niños/as. Al mismo tiempo,#ArCovKids aspira a convertirse en una herramienta comunicativa y interpretativa más eficaz y más equitativa, y capaz de producir impacto a nivel global. Siguiendo el espíritu de la Declaración de la UNESCO “Convirtiendo la amenaza del #COVID-19 en una oportunidad para un mayor apoyo al patrimonio documental”, nuestro archivo digital registra y preserva las experiencias infantiles y familiares de la pandemia actual, para así garantizar futuras investigaciones sobre el tema. Más específicamente, registramos dibujos, fotos, audios, vídeos, textos, registros sensoriales, juguetes y juegos simbólicos para documentar el impacto emocional, social, político, económico y cultural de la pandemia en la infancia y el espacio familiar. Con la preservación de estas fuentes cotidianas, esperamos generar nuevas narrativas sobre nuestra realidad actual y promover nuevos acuerdos sociales y emocionales entre historia y sociedad.

Artificial Intelligence In Medicine Lab Bcn-Aim

Our research group, BCN-AIM, aims to develop and demonstrate the next-generation of data science and artificial intelligence solutions for personalised medicine applications, in several fields such as cardiology, neurology, psychiatry and oncology. We are an international and multi-disciplinary team of 25 members and part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at the University of Barcelona. Several large-scale H2020 projects (euCanSHare, EarlyCause & EuCanImage) & Horizon Europe (RadioVal & DataTools4Heart) are coordinated by our lab director, Karim Lekadir. He is also WP leader of others H2020 & Horizon Europe projects (LongITools, Youth-GEMs, Happy Mums). Karim was recently granted an ERC for his project on Inclusive Artificial Intelligence for Accessible Medical Imaging Across Resource-Limited Settings (AIMIX). Karim Lekadir is also general co-chair for MICCAI2024. We are already looking forward to organising the 27th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention in Marrakesh, Morocco, Africa.

Biosoilutions

Soil degradation is considered a global emergency. 60 to 70% of EU soils are degraded due to unsustainable management practices. bioSOILUTIONS intends to optimise four bio-waste valorisation routes to develop advanced bio-waste soil improvers. These improvers aim at enhancing the nutrient recovery of soils from bio-waste and, therefore, reducing landfilling and incineration. The valorisation routes will render a range of bio-waste feedstocks, that combined with key additives will turn into at least five bio-waste soil improvers. Three Living Labs will co-create the bioSOILUTIONS’ soil improvers in Flandres (Belgium), Valencia and Murcia (Spain). They will involve key soil stakeholders from companies, public bodies or end-users to research centres and civil society to guarantee a good market fit of the developed soil improvers, coverage of sectorial needs and compliance with regulatory requirements. Moreover, bioSOILUTIONS will design an upscaling roadmap and a circular business model for each valorisation route to engage entrepreneurs and relevant soil companies to foster the commercialisation of advanced bio-waste soil improvers across the EU.

Car3d Project

The ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 is creating sanitary challenges like never seen before. Until there is a vaccine or effective treatment, the use of masks and other types of personal protective equipment (PPE), is the best way to limit the spread of the virus circulation. The challenge is to maintain the supply of masks, which are often not made for reuse, as well as other PPE, such as face shields. If the vaccine still needs 18 months to be developed, the EU will need 270 Billion of masks for the general population. Additive Manufacturing, could help to meet the demand for masks and other equipment, particularly in the case of reusable masks. However, we are faced with stark disparities across Europe in the standards and varieties of PPE and the coordination of regulatory certification for such technology and devices. Consequently, this Project aims to design, develop and validate reusable masks and other PPEs that comply with EU specifications, making that design available for replication around Europe that will meet quality and EU standards. This will allow to create a reference platform, improving Europe’s production capacities for a better response to Covid19.
