Digital Geography Lab
Digital Geography Lab aims at understanding society through interactions between people, and between people and their environment, from a geographical perspective. Much of our work uses people’s mobility and physical accessibility as an indicator of these interactions. Our work contributes to a wide range of research from urban geography, land use and transport planning to sustainability and conservation science. Methodologically, we are experts in mining and analysing spatial data, ranging from user-generated Mobile Big Data to more traditional data sources. We develop spatial analysis frameworks and combine them with machine learning. We pay special attention to ethical and privacy issues. As a researcher community, we strive for creativity, critical thinking and mutual respect. We are forerunners in open science, publishing tools and data openly whenever possible. We actively share our knowledge through high quality teaching and science communication.

Mats H2020
MATS aims to identify key leverage points for changes in agricultural trade policy that foster the positive and reduce the negative impacts of trade on sustainable development and human rights. Particular attention is paid to SDG1 No Poverty, SDG2 Zero Hunger and SDG3 Good Health and Wellbeing, as well as SDG6 Clean Water, SDG13 Climate Action and SDG15 Life on Land. Focus is on improving the governance, design and implementation of trade practices, regimes and policies at national, EU, African and global levels. In implementation, MATS develops and pilots new tools for a systemic analysis, and assessment, of the interactions between agricultural trade, investments, sustainability and development. The main project outputs are:(1) New quantitative and qualitative insights on the interactions between agricultural markets, trade, investments, policy, environmental sustainability and human wellbeing, underpinned, and illustrated, by 15 in-depth case studies.(2) A set of Discussion Papers and Policy Briefs on the impacts of EU, African and WTO policies with their synergies and trade-offs, on transition pathways for desirable changes in trade relations and instruments with recommendations for enhancing the coherence of agricultural and trade policies with sustainable development goals and policy.(3) An enhanced civil society–stakeholder–policy dialogue that is supported by an evidence-based communication platform – the Sustainable Agri-Food Trade Hub – which fosters effective collaboration between researchers, policymakers, civil society and the wider stakeholder community.(4) A set of innovative research tools for the analysis of the interactions between agricultural trade, agricultural and rural investments, policy, innovation, environmental sustainability and human wellbeing, and a suite of communication materials on agricultural markets, trade and sustainability. Nappi-National Plant Phenotyping Infrastructure
NaPPI – the Finnish National Plant Phenotyping Infrastructure provides access to high throughput imaging of plant growth and physiology. Our facility at University of Helsinki comprises of : 1. Plantscreen™ high-throughput automated plant phenotyping system for plants reaching a maximum size of 120 cm in height and 100 cm in width with throughput of 270 plants with single pot per tray set-up. This phenotyping system is suitable for phenotyping of mono- and dicotyledonous plants i.e. wheat, soybean, corn, cotton, tomatoes, pepper, etc- The PlantScreen phenotyping unit has an integrated PlantScreen Client control module for designing experimental set-ups, defining imaging protocols, moving plants through the system, and for data processing. The equipment is designed for plant cultivation and growth, plant management, automated movement, monitoring of environment parameters and plant randomization in the growth buffer. Plantscreen™ high-throughput automated plant phenotyping system for plants reaching a maximum size of 40cm in height. Integrated PlantScreen Scheduler Client control module for designing experimental set-ups, defining imaging protocols, moving plants through the system, and for data processing- Integrated software package for system control, data acquisition, data analysis, database management for morphometric imaging and watering & weighing analysis- PlantScreen phenotyping unit has an integrated PlantScreen Scheduler Client that controls modules for designing experimental set-ups, defining imaging protocols, moving plants through the system and for data processing. The equipment is designed for plant cultivation and growth, plant management, automated movement and automated scoring of plant phenotypes.

The Strategic Research Council (SRC) funds high-quality research with great societal relevance and impact. Strategic research projects seek concrete solutions to grand challenges that require multidisciplinary approaches. SRC is established within the Academy of Finland. SRC-funded research projects form thematic programmes. SRC's annual funding budget is some 55 million euros. Rådet för strategisk forskning (RSF) finansierar forskning av högsta kvalitet som har stor betydelse och stort genomslag i samhället.
