Electromechanics Research Group

The Research Group of Electromechanics at Aalto University aims to address timely research topics related to electrical machines with the integration of electrical, mechanical, and thermal aspects. We develop our own methods and related softwares and validate the methodology through experimental procedures in our own facilities. Some of the methods we develop are also incorporated in commercial softwares for better transfer of knowledge to our stakeholders. The group has the facilities to test electrical machines with power up to 150 kW. Test results are typically needed for the validation of the numerical methods and models developed. The Group is conducting research on the design and optimization of machines for industrial applications. This research includes transport electrification by designing next generation of machines dedicated to More Electric Aircraft (MEA) and Electric Vehicles (EV). The Group is involved in various national, european, and international research projects and collaborates with industrial and academic partners around the globe. Inflames Research Flagship

InFLAMES (Innovation Ecosystem based on the Immune System) is a Finnish research flagship that aims at identifying novel drug targets using the most modern technological platforms and finding novel diagnostic tools to identify the patients benefitting from personalised therapies. Behind nearly all diseases is a disturbance in the body’s immunological defence. If it is too active, we develop autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes or arthritis. On the other hand, weak immune responses predispose us to cancer and serious bacterial or viral infections. The development in the field has led to drugs that affect the immune system. They either strengthen the person’s own immune system or control it where it is too effective. Finnish drug development industry has introduced 22 original drugs, of which 21 have been created in Turku. Our goal is that the InFLAMES-collaboration propels the number of Finnish original drugs to new heights. In addition to developing drugs that modify the immune response in individuals, InFLAMES advances diagnostics that aim at identifying personalised treatment for each patient. This, we believe, is not accomplished alone, but in a collaboration with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. InFLAMES Flagship is a joint initiative of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, Finland. Flagship is funded by Academy of Finland.

Rapid Project

RaPID is the acronym of Raman Probe for chemical contaminant IDentification. RaPID is a NATO founded research project which run from 1st June 2017 The overall aim of RaPID is to develop and test a robust, reliable and low-cost portable Raman probe which will be employed for chemical contaminant identification in surface waters. The sensor probe is based on a label free Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) technology by using cost effective metal nanostructures, integrated with optical fiber and microfluidics. The RaPID probe developed along the project will be used for detecting major contaminants traces in water such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Ammonia, Nitrates, Herbicides and Pesticides. The proposed technology will be a breakthrough in applying photonic sensing to chemical and biological defence, relevant to several NATO SPS Key Priorities, such as environmental security and counter-terrorism.

Research Initiative On Organised Crime Rioc

Research Initiative on Organised Crime (RIOC) is an independent think tank, conducting policy-oriented research on organised crime (OC) and developing tools for disrupting organised crime groups (OCGs) and networks. The vision of RIOC is to become an internationally recognised expert hub, which contributes significantly to research on OC, strengthens public awareness of threats and risks of OC and participates in joint international efforts to enhance capabilities in fighting OC. RIOC aims at crafting increasingly efficient tools to combat OC as well as at providing advice in the implementation phase of both strategic and tactical instruments on national and international levels. While studying the threats and risks of the rising OC phenomena, prevention techniques as well as instruments for the disruption of organised crime groups (OCGs), RIOC serves as an international platform for experts and practitioners interested in professional development. With the objective of connecting OC experts and practitioners, RIOC seeks to promote horizontal learning and knowledge exchange. RIOC experts contribute on a demand-driven basis to projects and/or research publications, but in addition the network provides an opportunity to compare experiences, cooperate and brainstorm in a peer group of OC specialists. RIOC provides this network both an online platform of continuous dialogue as well as regular opportunities for face-to-face encounter creating a true community of practise. RIOC online space hosts both studies and tools along with an interactive discussion board.

Sys-Life Systemic Approaches To Improve Cardiometabolic And Brain Health During Lifespan

Systemic approaches to improve cardiometabolic and brain health during lifespan (SYS-LIFE) is a pioneering postdoctoral fellowship programme that seeks to deliver urgently-needed breakthroughs in the field of cardiometabolic and brain diseases, promote scientific renewal in this field and develop its future leaders. It is based at the University of Turku in Finland and supported by partners in different sectors. Co-funded by European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, SYS-LIFE applies bottom-up,'Institute for Advanced Study' model to build on UTU’s outstanding expertise and unique facilities for cardiometabolic and brain health research. SYS-LIFE will recruit 11 experienced postdoctoral researchers in 2023 and 2024 (22 in total), each for 36 months, through an open, international, competitive, merit based selection process dependent on external peer-review, in line with the European Charter and Code.

Turku BioImaging is an interdisciplinary imaging organisation that aims to bring together bioimaging expertise in Turku and elsewhere in Finland. Turku BioImaging is jointly operated by the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. TBI manages Euro-BioImaging Finland coordinates funding acquisition for imaging instrumentation and services, operates an international MSc program in biomedical imaging (BIMA), and provides image data services. TBI-associated imaging facilities provide open access services ranging from molecular and cellular imaging and high content analysis to whole animal and human imaging. TBI is led by a tripartite management team, and has a broad-based Steering Committee.

AHA-LAB Oy is an accredited testing laboratory for asbestos, dusts, man-made mineral fibers and harmful chemical substances in construction materials and ambient air. The laboratory also performs indoor air quality- and occupational hygiene-related sampling, measurements and analysis. The accreditation is issued by Finnish Accreditation Service (FINAS) and is based on SFS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The accreditation covers analysis of asbestos from ambient air and construction material samples. Our accreditation number is T326.

Cell Imaging And Cytometry Core

The Cell Imaging and Cytometry (CIC) Core is an open-access centralized facility where end users receive support to carry out conventional and advanced imaging techniques. The unit has combined resources to provide state-of-the-art equipment that is open to all researchers. CIC is part of the Biocenter Finland Infrastructure network on Biological Imaging.
