Gambia Senior Secondary School
The Gambia Senior Secondary School has its origins back in 1876 when the institution was founded on Dobson Street, Banjul, by the Wesleyan Mission. This followed the visit over 25 years earlier of Mother Anne-Marie Javouhey, first of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, who visited Bathurst and planned a mission which came into being in 1849. In 1898 the school was re-opened as as the Methodist Boys' High School and in 1915 the Girls High School was opened in what is currently Albion Lower Basic. The girls' and boys' high schools were merged in 1959 to form the Gambia High School and moved to the junction at the main entry point into the Banjul capital and Box Bar Road. In 1994 the name was changed yet again to the Gambia Senior Secondary School when the Government's education policy was changed.

Africa Research Excellence Fund Aref
The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) nurtures and invests in talented, emerging African health researchers at the most vulnerable points in their career. Our vision is a growing community of African researchers who deliver excellent research that benefits patients and populations across the continent and globally. What we do Achieving better health demands more health research with the potential for greater impact on healthcare policies and practice. We need to develop a new generation of leading African researchers – working in Africa on Africa’s health challenges – and we need to do this urgently. AREF Research Development Fellowships, awarded through competition, provide 3- to 9-month placements in centres of research excellence in the UK, the rest of Europe and Africa. AREF Essential Grant Writing Skills Workshops address these deficiencies through training programmes, facilitated by world-class research experts and experienced research managers, all with extensive experience in writing successful grants, serving on or managing grant review panels and developing research leadership. In supporting AREF, together we will improve health and save lives in Africa and around the world.
