The Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL) is an internationally recognized leader in materials science and cross-disciplinary topics, conducting competitive research, educating students, and offering innovative solutions for industrial needs. Its scientific competitiveness as well as its research and innovation ecosystem is enhanced through the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Material Research and Technology Transfer CAMART2 project: Our vision - to foster research, development and innovation at global level by creating and maintaining sustainable growth in solid-state physics and material sciences, by providing competitive research environment, and by attracting world-class scientists. Our mission - to turn excellence in solid state physics and materials science into highly educated people and innovation. Our goal - to strengthen the Institute as a Centre for Excellence in Material Research and transfer it into Material Research & Innovation Centre. Our research directions include: Fundamental and experimental research in solid state physics and materials science; Improvement of technologies and experimental methods; Research on material applications. The ISSP UL pays great attention to education, as well as to attracting highly qualified scientific staff. The Institute currently employs more than 100 doctors of science, carrying out internationally competitive research, educating students and offering innovative solutions for industrial needs. ISSP UL cooperates with more than 100 scientific institutions around the world, developing an average of 50 scientific projects per year. About one third of the projects are carried out in jointly with companies. Materize, a platform for cooperation with industry, has been established to promote collaboration between ISSP UL scientists and Latvian and foreign companies in the field of high technology in materials science.

Latvian State Institute Of Wood Chemistry
Development of knowledge-based, environment-friendly low-waste technologies for obtaining competitive materials and products from wood and other types of plant biomass for sustainable utilization of natural resources for economic, social and ecological benefits. The LSIWC research themes’ priorities embrace practically all fields related to the utilization of wood and lignocellulose biomass and are based on interdisciplinary theoretical wood and lignocellulosic materials studies on the molecular and nano-level. The main areas of research are:^structure, bio- and weathering durability, degradation mechanisms of wood and wood based materials by microorganisms and under environmental impact, methods for improving their sustainability properties (including modification and surface protection) to enhance competitiveness with non-renewable building materials;^biorefinery approaches, development of technologies for wasteless cascade use of wood components for obtaining chemical compounds, composite and hybrid materials and added value products designed for the food industry, agriculture, pharmacy, healthcare, etc;^rational use of woodworking, wood and biomass processing residues for innovative multifunctional products (including fiber and insulation materials) for agriculture, building, the transport field, forestry and environment protection.

The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia (IMCS UL) was established in 1959 as Computing Centre of research character. The founder of the Computing Centre was Prof. E.Āriņš. At present the director is Dr. sc.comp. R.Balodis-Bolužs, and executive director is Ināra Opmane, M.math. The staff of IMCS UL consists of 200 researchers, assistants, engineers, and software developers. Annual number of scientific publications is 150-160, presentations in international conferences more than 100. Apart from research, IMCS UL has always been involved also in commercial software development. IMCS UL is also one of the largest Internet service providers in Latvia (SigmaNet, earlier known as LATNET). Besides that IMCS UL houses the Master's Degree Studies in Computer Science at the University of Latvia.

EnergyPROSPECTS (PROactive Strategies and Policies for Energy Citizenship Transformation) works with a critical understanding of energy citizenship that is grounded in the state-of-the-art Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) insights. Funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme for three years, under GA No.101022492EnergyPROSPECTS, and aims to develop a broad understanding of energy citizenship as a policy concept, a sociotechnical imaginary, a knowing-of-governance, i.e. a social construction of desirable/normal civic agency in future energy systems. The project will identify and examine a range of cross-cutting issues in energy citizenship, which will inform iterative typology development and criteria for case selection.

The FOTONIKA-LV project aims at unlocking and boosting R&D potential for photonics in Latvia. Direct beneficiary of the project – the Association FOTONIKA-LV comprised of three institutes of the University of Latvia - Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy, Astronomy, and Geodynamics and Geodezy. FOTONIKA-LV has about 100 researchers: including 4 Professors, 28 with PhD degrees, 7 skilled technicians, 34 PhD candidates and MSc level students. Research interests span basic and applied sciences of photonics domain: optics, optoelectronics; in atmosphere and space; Earth geodesy; laser ranging and remote sensing; atomic and molecular physics; laser spectroscopy and plasma light sources; bio-photonics and medical physics. Objectives include: Development of 10 existing strategic partnerships with leading centres in Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Germany, Spain; Exchanges of know-how through 50 secondments; Helping to reverse the “brain drain” in to a “brain-gain” by recruiting and repatriating 14 researchers to FOTONIKA-LV. from U.S, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Israel, Russia, Bulgaria. Organization of 3 large scale conferences in photonics, and summer schools in Riga; Organization of 3 strategy technology foresight workshops on RTD policy in the photonics domain; Organization of 1 large scale conference on sustainable development, knowledge society and future manufacturing; Upgrade of research infrastructure; Establishing a public-access Riga Photonics Centre, to support transfer of knowledge and technology commercialization.
