Biocat - Graduate School In Biocatalysis

BioCat facilitates career development for young scientists in the field of biocatalysis and protein science. We offer courses, webinars, workshops, networking events and grants to help PhDs develop their skills and build a professional The National graduate school in biocatalysis, BioCat, is established to provide expertise and tools for research and education within biocatalysis in Norway. BioCat is granted by The Norwegian Research Council for the period 2016 – 2024. BioCat is administrated from UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, and consists of six partner universities: UiT, NTNU, UiS, NMBU, UiO and UiB. The BioCat board consists of 12 members which are representatives from the universities and the institute sector/industry: SINTEF, IRIS, NOFIMA and NORCE. Through the partner universities we provide educational courses and networking opportunities to allow our members to academically develop and build professional networks. Our PhD courses are held by experts in the field at the respective partner universities. Topics include protein crystallography, molecular modelling, protein NMR, synthetic biology, bioprospecting, biorefining and much more. Our student members also have to opportunity to apply for travel grants – either for research stays, specialised workshops or conferences. BioCat additionally aims to bridge the gap between the biotech industry and our members, to prepare them for life after academia. We arrange an annual conference with invited speakers from both academia and the biotech industry. Here, we also give the PhD student the opportunity to present their science for a broader audience and receive feedback on both content and presentation skills. Although our conference has a scientific agenda, including poster sessions, we also prioritize team-building and social activities so that our members get to know each other and hopefully build long lasting relations.

International Permafrost Association

The International Permafrost Association (IPA) disseminates knowledge concerning permafrost and promotes research and cooperation among people and organizations engaged in scientific investigation and engineering work on permafrost. The IPA supports the production of scientific products (e.g. permafrost maps and databases) and education and outreach resources through our Action Groups, Interest Groups, and Standing Committees. Additionally, the IPA initiates and oversees Regional and International Conferences on Permafrost. The IPA is governed by its Executive Committee and a Council consisting of representatives from 26 Adhering Bodies having interests in some aspect of theoretical, basic and applied frozen ground research, including permafrost, seasonal frost, artificial freezing and periglacial phenomena.

The metallurgical industry in the EU accounts for 70 million tonnes direct CO2 emissions annually (2017). Mitigating the CO2 footprint from the production is essential to ensure further licence to operate in Europe. Moreover, the industry is highly dependent on imports. Less than 15% of metal input to the European process industry is supplied from domestic extraction. Additionally, only 31% of the coking coal is sourced in Europe. The latter has been identified as a critical raw material. The HARARE project address these two issues. Substituting carbon with hydrogen is one of the few ways metal production can become CO2-emissions free. Also utilizing raw materials more efficiently, will simultaneously reduce Europe’s dependence on Critical raw materials. HARARE will demonstrate sustainable pathways to produce non-ferrous metals using hydrogen as an enabler, for removing waste and valourising materials in carbon free processes. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 958307.
