At IARAI, we build powerful simulators from industrial-scale real-world data advancing learning strategies or test one-shot/few-shot learning to help solve some of humanity most pressing problems. Prediction trough description Recent advances in modern machine learning allow exploiting Big Data to study complex challenges that were unsolvable before. At IARAI we focus on pressing problems with great impact on society and the planet. We can now, for instance, predict patterns in urban traffic or large-scale rainfall, assess climate change, classify biomedical images, and help discover new drugs. A theory of AI The field of machine learning has undergone a revolution: well-known black box algorithms have shown their potential and now dominate methods delivering the state-of-the-art performance on many benchmark problems. What makes these algorithms black box is that we have no rigorous human intuitive understanding of their success. As a result, questions with no clear answer arise: What architecture should a neural network have to handle a certain new data type? How can one combine different networks effectively?

The quality of water is of fundamental importance for human health in all areas of life. Unsafe drinking water is one of the top 10 global health risks. In order to meet this topic, the Interuniversity Cooperation Centre for Water and Health was founded in 2013. Partners are the TU Wien, the Medical University of Vienna and the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Krems. Research and Teaching Our Centre has two main focuses – research and teaching at the international level and scientific expertise in the areas of water quality and health as a competent partner for both the public and private sector. Innovation Driven by a holistic approach, our activities emphasise on the development of innovative microbiological, molecular-biological, physical and chemical methods as well as numerical models for water quality investigation. Pharmacoinformatics Research Group
Following a holistic pharmacoinformatic approach we combine structural modeling of proteins, structure-based drug design, chemometric and in silico chemogenomic methods, statistical modeling and machine learning approaches to develop predictive computational systems for transporters and ion channels. The validation and optimisation of the obtained in silico models by strong links to experimental groups is an integral part of these activities. Furthermore, we aim at developing tools for in vitro to in vivo translation and for toxicity prediction, thereby leveraging integrated life science data as provided by the Open PHACTS Discovery Platform. Research activities are complemented by strong educational activities, outlined in the doctoral program MolTag and in EUROPIN, a European PhD Program in Pharmacoinformatics. The main scientific aims of the Research Group deal with the molecular basis of promiscuous drug-protein interaction (off-pharmacologies) and the development and use of complex, non-linear methods in the drug discovery process. Currently our targets include several ABC-transporter, the hERG potassium channel, as well as the GABAA receptor. On a methodological basis, we work on computational models for prediction of toxicity endpoints as well as development of KNIME workflows for complex data analysis.
