Opal Rheumatology Ltd

OPAL Rheumatology is an independent not-for-profit Australian clinical research organisation which aims to improve the health outcomes of patients with rheumatic diseases through audit and research. OPAL is the custodian of one of the largest datasets of patients with rheumatic diseases in the world, containing data captured from more than unique patients during more than 1.6 million clinical consultations. Deidentified data is regularly extracted and aggregated from the electronic medical records (EMR) of consenting patients treated by approximately 120 rheumatologists around Australia. The EMR (Audit4) shared by OPAL clinicians was specifically customised for rheumatology and collects comprehensive information on demographics, comorbidities, pathology, disease history and severity, and medication use. In addition, OPAL captures multifaceted outcomes data from both the physician and the patient perspective through a novel patient reported outcome (PRO) mechanism which allows for quality of life to be matched with clinical outcomes and medication utilisation. Since inception in 2009, OPAL has produced over 80 publications and abstracts. In addition, OPAL provides real world evidence to guide medical affairs and commercial strategy, and to support regulatory and reimbursement submissions.

The Trish Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation (ABN 22 089 078 464) was inspired by Trish Langsford who, having lost her battle with multiple sclerosis, passed away at the age of 30. The Foundation was established with the specific goal of finding a cure or preventive strategy for multiple sclerosis. Trish’s parents made a promise to her that they would not give up in the pursuit of the Trish Foundation’s goal. In contrast to a number of other charities, the Foundation is staffed by a team of dedicated, unpaid volunteers and every dollar raised is placed into research. The Directors of the Foundation cover the administrative expenses. The Foundation is working very closely with MS scientists around Australia towards our common goal.

The Centre for Ageing, Cognition, and Wellbeing in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University is a collaborative group of multidisciplinary researchers with interest in the normal and abnormal aspects of ageing. This includes research related to understanding and improving wellbeing related to neurodegenerative diseases, mental disorders, and health related conditions in the community and residential aged care. In addition, we are interested in understanding the normal impacts of ageing on cognition, reading, emotion regulation, social connections and workforce participation (retirement). We are also interested in studying how cognitive support systems (e.g. engaging in skilled activities with others) may benefit older adults. We have close connections with researchers across Macquarie University and collaborate broadly with psychology, cognitive science, medicine, audiology, physiotherapy and business, to name a few. We are the Distributed Sensing Systems (DSS) Group, one of the leading large scale sensing groups in the world, part of the Cyber-Physical Research Program at CSIRO’s Data61 Business Unit. Our work focuses on sustainable data acquisition from wireless sensors distributed over large spatial scales. It involves data captured from sensors through everyday devices, such as mobile or smartphone, and purpose-built devices for data collection from the natural or built environments, called wireless sensor networks. More objects are now connected to the Internet than people, heralding the age of the Internet of Things. Our group’s research is creating technologies that will radically improve the cost and quality of data gathering on a large scale to enhance the understanding of our natural and built environments and provide the ability to protect and manage Australia’s resources.
