To identify microbiome-based biomarkers and mechanisms that predict in advance when the body can no longer compensate for the dysfunctional liver (decompensated cirrhosis), when such decompensated cirrhosis will progress to acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), and a patient’s individual treatment response. Based on such biomarkers, we strive to develop novel diagnostic tools for earlier and better patient stratification and to establish personalised and effective treatment strategies. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

Much more often we hear how obesity, also known as metabolic syndrome, establishes itself as the biggest and deadliest disease of civilization. The goal of the NoIR initiative is in the name. No Insulin Resistency Change of the target value weight to insulin resistance in order to successfully treat the widespread disease obesity. Why is it important to combat insulin resistance and obesity? Insulin resistance is the factor for obesity and overweight in the population. But although insulin resistance is wrongly not yet regarded as a disease, it is the trigger for most diseases that seem to be incontestably anchored in the western population. But what is insulin resistance? In a nutshell, insulin resistance is the state of the body in which it has become so accustomed to an elevated insulin level through an unhealthy diet that the cells break down insulin receptors. As a result, increased insulin must be released during the next intake of food, which further reduces the body's sensitivity to insulin through receptor degradation. This is a dangerous vicious circle that usually swings up until insulin has to be injected into the body to stimulate the insensitive cells. A condition generally known as type 2 diabetes.
