Fraunhofer Ccpe

The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE on the way to make the plastics value added chain circular, to extract fewer fossil resources, to make products smarter, and to reduce end-of-life losses. The switchover from a linear to a circular plastics economy only succeeds with a multi-stakeholder approach. To this end, we are researching systemic, technical, and social innovations – over the entire life-cycle of plastic products. Fraunhofer CCPE combines the knowledge of six Fraunhofer Institutes: Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML, Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF and Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV.

Next generation nanomaterials are a challenge for the established risk assessment and management paradigm. The regulatory frameworks have just been modified to address risk assessment of primary nanomaterials with simple coatings and are currently in the first phase of implementing methods and tools adequate for simple nanomaterials. Next generation nanomaterials and products thereof, are multiconstuent materials which exhibit much more complex behaviour, potentially including mixture toxicology. The morphologies and stoichiometry of next generation advanced nanomaterials are not harmless, as designs including high aspect ratio shapes and heavy metal content are abundant. By elucidating the role of nanostructures, their transformation and initiation of adverse outcome pathways, HARMLESS will provide novel tools, guidance and decision support for balancing functionality versus risk to ensure that the next generation nanomaterials will be harmless. Society For Institutional Analysis - Sofia

Based on an interdisciplinary research approach, the Society for Institutional Analysis (short: sofia) investigates regulatory options for action at regional, national or European level. The research approach is also suitable for analyzing design options to improve the institutional framework in private and public organizations. The sofia team is interdisciplinary: legal scholars and economists work together with engineers as well as social and natural scientists. The methodological framework is provided by the model of homo oeconomicus institutionalis; it takes into account both the formal (e.g. laws and contracts) and informal (e.g. rules of fairness) institutional context of individual behavior. The majority of sofia's research projects deal with the institutional framework for "sustainable development", with the question of appropriate approaches to "Responsive Regulation" usually forming the core of the investigation.
