Max Planck Institute For Physics
The Max Planck Institute for Physics is one of the most renowned research institutions in particle physics. We explore the smallest building blocks of matter – elementary particles – and their interactions, aiming at answering some of the fundamental questions on the constituents of the universe: What is the nature of dark matter? Why is there hardly any antimatter in the universe? What are the mechanisms behind the violent processes in cosmic objects like black holes or gamma-ray bursts?

Bielefeld University
Transcending Boundaries – that’s what Bielefeld University stands for. Taking multiple perspectives and overcoming the boundaries between both disciplines and academic cultures in a problem-focused way is important to us. Bielefeld University is ranked 23rd in the international Times Higher Education Ranking “150 under 50” presenting the world’s best young universities. Hosting 13 faculties, Bielefeld University covers a range of subjects in humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and technology. As an internationally-oriented university, it combines a strong focus on research with a particular emphasis on top-quality teaching. More than students are enrolled in over 100 different course options, and the University employs approximately 2,750 staff, including 1,600 academic researchers and teachers. Max Planck Institute Of Psychiatry
The Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry is a research institute with a research hospital. The main goal is to uphold a uniquely close interaction between basic science, clinical research and clinical services in order to gain knowledge about and understanding of the causes of psychiatric disorders. This knowledge can then be applied to the development of novel diagnostic tools as well as therapeutic and preventive approaches. Stress- and trauma-related disorders such as major depression and anxiety disorders are our main research and clinical focus.

Max Planck Institute For Medical Research
Research at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research has, ever since its founding in 1927 as a Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, benefited from the work of notable scientists and excellent science on the border between physiology, physics, chemistry and biology. With the appointment of three new directors in the last few years, the institute has experienced a major reorientation. The new, central topic of research is to observe in real time and manipulate the complex dynamics of the interactions between macromolecules in the living cell, in health and disease. The four departments contribute their unique expertise in complementary areas: the determination of atomic structures (Ilme Schlichting), optical nanoscopy (Stefan Hell), design of new reporter molecules (Kai Johnsson) and cellular material research and biophysics (Joachim Spatz). This involves developing tools for biomedical research which could lead to new knowledge, insights and medical advances. In doing this, the institute upholds the vision of the founder, Ludolf von Krehl, to advance medical research through the collaboration of physiology, biology, physics and chemistry under one roof.
