The establishment of the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance or more commonly known by its acronym, ISRA, is to promote applied research in the area of Shari’ah and Islamic finance. ISRA act as a repository of knowledge for Shari’ah views or fatwas and undertake studies on contemporary issues in Islamic financial industry. ISRA contributes toward strengthening human capital development in the areas of Shari’ah and provide platform for greater engagement amongst practitioners, scholars, regulators, academicians via research and dialogues, both in the domestic and international environment. Through pioneering research and rigorous intellectual dialogue, ISRA aims to promote innovation and dynamism into new boundaries of Islamic finance. It is envisioned that with greater research and dialogues, mutual respect and recognition would emerge within Islamic financial industry global community. As a part of the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), ISRA is able to leverage on the existing infrastructure and facilities as well as to tap on the knowledge, expertise and resources of the academic faculty and post graduate students in INCEIF. To provide input and assistance in the strategic direction of ISRA’s research works, the Council of Scholars, a group comprising of eminent local and international Shari’ah scholars, has been set-up.

The Malaysian Cohort
The Malaysia Cohort (TMC) project is a national project that was initiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia in 2004 and approved by the Cabinet in 2005. It is a long-term research project that aims to systematically build a comprehensive resource constituting a biobank of body fluid samples and big data on healthcare that is obtained from over participants who originate from the general population of Malaysia. Investment in healthcare biotechnology is consistent with the core principles of Malaysia’s National Biotechnology Policy. TMC is part of the Asia Cohort Consortium, an international collaborative consortium of 8 countries including Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia and the United States. This consortium coordinates and combines resources and expertise from its eight members in the study of gene interactions, environments and lifestyle-causing diseases within each population. The results of such combined study serve to accurately identify risk factors and discover new biomarkers for a variety of illnesses.

The South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Research and Training Centre was first established as a legal entity in 1982 with eight member central banks/monetary authorities which has since grown to nineteen members in 2013. Since its inception in the early 1980’s, The SEACEN Centre has established its unique regional position in serving its membership of central banks in the Asia-Pacific region through its learning programmes, research work, and networking and collaboration platforms for capability building in central banking knowledge.
