The Spine Research Institute (SRI) is a unique group of multi-disciplinary experts and facilities dedicated to systematically improving the way we prevent, evaluate, and treat spine and other musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). We accomplish this mission through causal pathways research, education, and the development of platform technologies. The foundation of the Spine Research Institute was created in 1982 by our Executive & Scientific Director, Dr. William Marras. What began as a small faculty research lab quickly evolved into a growing collaboration between experts in a variety of complementary fields across engineering, life sciences, and medicine. In 2012, the Spine Research Institute was officially born to recognize a formal collaboration between the College of Engineering and the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University. As we grow, we continue to include new experts, partners, laboratories, and capabilities in our shared journey to lessen the physical, emotional, and financial suffering imposed by spine and other musculoskeletal disorders.

Steps Science And Technologies For Phosphorus Sustainability Center
The Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center is a convergence research community of diverse and leading scientists. We are addressing the complex challenges in phosphorus sustainability by integrating disciplinary contributions across the physical, life, social, and economic sciences. STEPS draws from atomic and molecular insights (e.g, chemistry, materials research, biochemistry, bioengineering) to develop materials and technologies that are deployed at the human scale (e.g, environmental and agricultural engineering, plant biology, crop and soil sciences) while considering supply-chain logistics, life cycle, and other regional and global issues (e.g, ecology, economics, sociology, policy). STEPS further leverages disciplinary contributions that transcend length scales and serve as integration mechanisms within the Center (e.g, science of team science, data science).

The James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality—known as the Stone Center—was launched on September 1, 2016. It renames and expands the Graduate Center’s Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Center, which opened its doors at the Graduate Center in 2009. The mission of the Stone Center is to build and disseminate knowledge related to the causes, nature, and consequences of multiple forms of socio-economic inequality. Although the Stone Center’s associated faculty and students have diverse interests and utilize a range of methods, they share a commitment to scholarship that is quantitative, data-driven, interdisciplinary, and policy-oriented, and that addresses questions that are cross-nationally comparative and/or global in scope.

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is an off-campus research laboratory, teaching, outreach, and service unit of UNC Chapel Hill. IMS is located on the central North Carolina coast in Morehead City, North Carolina. IMS and the on-campus Department of Marine Sciences form the internationally recognized UNC-CH Marine Sciences Program. 4 The Institute’s mission is to serve the State and the Nation by conducting cutting-edge research, training young scientists, providing expertise to governmental agencies and industry, and promoting new knowledge to inform public policy. The Institute is strategically located on 6.33 acres of waterfront property on the central North Carolina coast. The unique environment, the Croatan-Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine System, is the second largest estuarine system in the U.S. and an ideal site to study the ecology, conservation and restoration of coastal marine resources and to develop and apply new technologies in research. IMS facilities include approximately sqare feet of research space, a running sea water system that feeds both indoor and outdoor experimental facilities, outside experimental ponds, a small on-site dormitory (suitable for short stays), meeting rooms, maintenance and fabrication facilities, a small fleet of trucks and motor-powered boats ranging in length from 17-25 feet and a 48-foot vessel, the R.V. Capricorn.
