Teatru Salesjan
We’ve been in Sliema now for over 110 years, stimulating interest in the performing arts for younger people, nurturing local talent and involving ourselves in the lives of our community. When local philanthropist Alphonse Maria Galea laid the foundation stone back then in 1907 he was laying down the roots of a building that would be closely linked to thousands of lives in the Sliema area. Generations of Maltese people, some of whom eventually became Atturi Salesjani, have acted on our stage, built sets, sewn costumes and painted scenery and their sons and daughters have followed after them. The building has changed a bit since those early days; the stage has grown, new seats were put in, the bar moved around and the shows we put on have changed too. We now open our arms not only to the local community but also to the world. International artists and companies have performed here most notably The Globe Company from London. We always try to vary our programme at Teatru Salesjan so there really is something for everyone. Music-lovers can listen to top-class jazz from Jes Psaila and Luke Briffa, classical music from world-renowned soprano Miriam Cauchi, original compositions from composer Alex Vella-Gregory and, at the cutting edge of modern Maltese music, Red Electrick and the fully femmetastic Fuzz Honeys. Alongside these established performers we also encourage young up and coming artists to try out new material in front of an audience for the first time.
