Sidewind
About Us - Sidewind At Sidewind, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the container shipping industry through the power of wind energy. Our mission is to showcase the immense potential of wind energy in decarbonizing maritime transportation. The SideWind Solution Sidewind introduces a groundbreaking concept centered around a plug-and-play, recyclable, practical, and cost-effective vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). These turbines are horizontally arranged inside a wall-free container, strategically positioned to harness the abundant wind energy that flows over cargo ships. Pioneering Icelandic Technology Sidewind plays a pivotal role in the WHISPER project, representing the core Icelandic technology. As a dynamic start-up, we hold the patent for a containerized wind turbine that can be effortlessly lowered onto and lifted off almost any vessel. This innovative technology generates electricity that seamlessly integrates into a vessel's power system. Eco-Friendly Initiatives Our commitment to sustainability extends to using recycled containers for our industrial wind turbines. We have secured funding to build our first such turbine, currently undergoing rigorous testing with the support of Samskip. Redefining Maritime Energy While small turbines are a common sight at sea, often used by yachters to recharge onboard batteries, our concept elevates wind energy generation to an unprecedented level. Imagine the potential of multiple turbines—perhaps even up to a hundred—working in unison on a single ship, significantly reducing carbon emissions and fuel consumption. Meet the Team Sidewind is driven by a passionate husband-and-wife team, María Kristín Þrastardóttir and Óskar Svavarsson. Their combined expertise and dedication are at the heart of our innovative solutions. At Sidewind, we are poised to transform the future of container shipping by harnessing the power of wind. Join us on this exciting journey toward a greener, more sustainable maritime industry.

Iceland GeoSurvey, ÍSOR, is a leading provider of scientific and technical expertise to the geothermal industry. ÍSOR is a self-financing, state-owned, nonprofit institution. ÍSOR is originally founded in 1945 as part of the State Electrical Authority. At that time systematic energy research began in Iceland. ÍSOR and its predecessors have played a key role in this work from the start. As a direct result, over 65% of the primary energy use in Iceland at present has its source in geothermal energy, and more than 90% of all houses are directly heated with geothermal. We are proud to have a background of 80 years in the geothermal business and believe our experience and know-how are our most valuable assets. Our main focus is: • being in the forefront of geoscientific research, development, and service • finding ways to enhance and augment geothermal resources • enhancing the environment and contributing to the debate on environmental issues • actively promoting geothermal development by increasing public and political awareness and understanding • training scientists throughout the world in geothermal science and development ÍSOR provides consulting services in most aspects of geothermal exploration and utilization worldwide. Our experience covers many other geoscience-related fields, including groundwater studies, marine geology and environmental monitoring. Education and training have always been an important part of ÍSOR’s activities, as have its strong ties to the academic community. ÍSOR hosts the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme (GRÓ GTP).
