Huis Horison
Established in 1974, Horizon House is a residential and protected work centre for adult people living with an intellectual disability. We provide employment to all the 131 residents as well as to 39 day workers. The residents need caring, growth, self-esteem, socialising and relationships. Like all of us, they too, have dreams of things they would like to do. But, being intellectually disabled, they are vulnerable and that is why they require a safe environment in which they can come into their own. Based on their intellectual abilities and interests, the residents join one of ten work areas. This allows them to make a meaningful contribution through sewing, recycling, repair work, cooking, gardening or something else in a sheltered environment. At the same time, the work areas offer therapeutic value and all the benefits of a proper job – self-worth, recognition, pride, companionship, quality of life and hope. Holistic and client-centered service is provided by Horizon House’s staff members, instructors, medical staff and a social worker. We also take care of their recreational and spiritual needs as well as personal development. And we support their parents and families. Horizon House is a non-profit company responsible for its own funding. In order to run a financially sustainable centre, we have to supplement our income with donations, sales, fundraising, events and bequests. The Centre is located on the outskirts of the Stellenbosch, Western Cape.

Friends Day Centre
About Us Friends Day Centre is a Non-Profit Organisation with humble beginnings. In 1959 Lorna Ingram started a care and learning facility for her son, David and 4 other children who had special needs. The original facility was a small building the size of a double garage. From those simple beginnings, Friends Day Centre has grown into a care facility for up to 120 learners with severe and profound disabilities. Those receiving treatment are from ages as young as 2 years old and the facilities have expanded over the years to 10 classrooms, a physiotherapy room, a jacuzzi for hydrotherapy, outdoor swimming pool and a sensory room. More than 30 staff members attend to the needs of the learners and 3 buses provide transport for around 40 learners. Friends Day Centre, operates from 08h15 to 14h00, Mondays to Fridays during Western Cape school terms and is situated on the grounds of Alexandra Hospital in Maitland, Cape Town. The Centre provides appropriate education, personal skills development and an array of therapies for learners. The Centre accommodates learners from different communities, suffering from various and / or multiple disabilities, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida and epilepsy, among others. The aim is to enhance their quality of life, encourage a degree of independence and give them the chance to live a relatively normal life. The Centre provides parents with the peace of mind that their special needs child is being cared for during the workday.

Floroma Old Aged Home
Established in 1953, Floroma Old Aged Home exists to provide safe accommodation for golden oldies not catered for by the ‘for-profit retirement village’ industry. It was originally established for the aged from Florida, Roodepoort and Maraisburg (and that’s where the name came from – FLOrida ROodepoort MAraisburg). However, over the decades this geographic focus was expanded to include people from all over South Africa. • Floroma is registered as an NPO with the NPO directorate, with the registration number 002 011 NPO. • The independent living section consists of 74 cottages, 11 of which can accommodate couples. The rest are for single people. • The Frail section can accommodate up to 66 people. Residents in Frail get three good, healthy, tasty and nutritious meals per day, teas and coffees, daily laundry and 24/7 access to professional nursing support. • In addition to the above, various activities are facilitated under our active aging programme, while our Social Worker provides counselling, as needed. Floroma is very serious about its Not-For-Profit status and we strive to keep the cost of accommodation as low as possible, while trying to make it a positively magical place to live in!
