Supporting Girls In Sports
Women’s sports are often marginalized because they are not seen as ‘real’ or good as men’s sports and female athletes sometimes are marginalized or seen as deviant because they violate feminist norms. Sports are sites for challenging and revising gender ideology. In male-identified social worlds, the values and experiences of men are assumed to be the standards for everyone. Therefore, when women are in positions of authority they are ‘out of place’ and arouse suspicion about how they obtained their power and how they might use it. If women attempt to reduce suspicion by fitting in or acting like men, they may be seen as phony or manipulative, and therefore undeserving of their position. This makes it easy to discredit women leaders in sports. This hinders the careers of women in coaching and administration. Supporting Girls In Sports aims to raise awareness for gender inequality in sports by encouraging girls to pursue occupations in sports and by highlighting the possibilities for girls in sports in St.Lucia and the wider Caribbean

If there is anything we love more than the sport of athletics, it’s developing young people. We want our members to succeed on the track and in the field, but more importantly, we want to see them excel in life. Whether it’s academics (nearly 20 of our members have earned university scholarships over the years), promoting an attitude of service (giving to Dominica and the Transit Home), building self-confidence (participation in pageants and bodybuilding competition), or becoming better citizens (we have had members involved in Youth Parliament and elected as leaders in their schools and communities), we pride ourselves on going the extra mile to uplift our members. Of course, that’s not to say that we ignore the track!
