Working almost exclusively with natural materials, Aran knitwear remains as much in fashion today as it did yesteryear. The Hanna Hats story began in 1921 when David Hanna cycled over 100 miles from Belfast to Donegal with the hopes of securing an apprenticeship with McDaid’s Tailors in Donegal Town. David was successful and after a few short years Hanna Hats, as we know it today, was established in 1924. David initially focused on tailoring suits, and then by chance he discovered a particular interest and flair for headwear. The company evolved to specialise in designing and creating handcrafted hats and caps. John Joseph Hanna joined the business with his three brothers in 1964. John had a passion for beautiful fabrics, customer service, and upholding the impeccable quality standards set by his father. Today you’ll find John’s children, Eleanor and John Patrick, fulfilling this legacy as they continue to create timeless headwear pieces and accessories in their Donegal Town workshop. They continue to hold dear their craft, community, customers, original designs, innovation, natural fabrics, and high-quality standard set by their father John and his father David before him.

Emblem Weavers Irish Linen

Jim Conway began his trade as a weaver at the age of 15, establishing Emblem Weavers in 1962 at the age of 21. Having received money as a birthday gift from his mother, bought two secondhand looms, made a yarn winder from a bicycle wheel, and set his weaving business from a basement in Amien Street in Dublin. He purchased some yarn and wove his first lot of wool samples which he began to sell door to door. During this time, he became well known and began selling to large department stores and Dublin based designers, producing wonderful wool fabrics. Image; The Wexford People. In 1981 Emblem Weavers invested in modern looms and began to weave colour woven Irish Linen with the first collection presented at Interstoff the international trade fair in Frankfurt. It was an instant success and international business began with Emblem in Europe and later the United States and Japan. This led Jim to expand Emblem Weavers and move location to Wexford in the South East of Ireland. Jim's love for working with linen yarn and producing some of the finest linen fabrics meant that Irish Linen became our main production fabric. Today, Emblem Weavers is very much a family affair with three of Jim’s nine children, Seamus, Stephen and Debbie directly engaged in the running of the business. We remain, with pride, one of Ireland’s main producers of traditional quality Irish Linen with co-ordinating scarves and accessories for the global boutique and ready to wear market. We enjoy being creative with our designs and love producing new fabrics that are appealing to international fashion designers.

Liz, a textile designer, and hand-weaver is inspired by paintings, and the colours and hues of the changing seasons. Liz is enthusiastic about her work. She uses natural materials, along with specially spun boucle wool, kid mohair and locally farmed Alpaca, which she hand-dyes in Swallow Studios, producing stunningly distinct colours. The yarns are hand-woven on wooden looms which are powered by human energy. Her scarves and wraps are hand-knotted when they come off the loom. Then they are hand-washed to bring out the luxurious softness of the fibre. Liz’s work is high quality. She makes heirloom pieces which with care and gentle handwashing will last for generations.
