Background
About Al Arsenault
PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS - wildlife population ecology and demography, landscape ecology (interaction of habitat connectivity/configuration on wildlife populations and predator/prey dynamics), and wildlife disturbance ecology (natural and linear/polygonal anthropogenic disturbance thresholds). EXPERTISE - I've worked extensively in remote locations across North America in landscapes ranging from desert and grassland to boreal forest ecosystems on a wide variety of wildlife taxa of conservation and management concern. My specialization is ungulates, fur-bearers and waterfowl in boreal and prairie ecoregions. I provide wildlife science expertise and technical oversight with respect to wildlife study designs, survey methods, bio-statistical analyses, wildlife population assessment, population/habitat modelling, disturbance effects assessment/interpretation, mitigation strategies, habitat protection/restoration plans, and wildlife management/conservation planning and implementation. WOODLAND CARIBOU - I've led and supported numerous studies of local populations in Canadian jurisdictions (AB, SK, MB, ON, PQ, NL) with respect to non-invasive genetic sampling (NGS), capture recapture estimation (CR), satellite telemetry studies, aerial herd composition/distribution surveys, large scale population monitoring programs, applied research, disturbance effects assessments (EAs, EIAs), population and habitat modelling, habitat restoration plans, population assessment and recovery plans (federal and provincial), range conservation plans, caribou protection plans (CPP) and mitigation plans, and habitat compensation/offset plans. I'm actively involved with caribou working groups both nationally, provincially and academically. SECTORS - My project work spans the mining, transportation, oil & gas, electrical transmission, renewable energy, forestry, water and utility supply, agriculture, and government public service sectors. EXPERIENCE - My diverse field, applied research, and analytic experience ranges from small to large scale environmental assessments (EA’s EIAs), and short to long-term wildlife monitoring studies of approved large scale projects in Canadian jurisdictions, and to a limited extent internationally, including applied research collaborations. Currently serving as Canadian Rep to TWS Council. Former Canadian Section Rep on TWS Certification Review Board. I also serve as a peer reviewer for several science journals.
