Stop trying to climb the corporate ladder and thinking you have to impress people with how smart you are and how much you've accomplished. There is no ladder, no certainty, no promise that your achievements today translate into success tomorrow. I coach leaders how to advance in their careers by showing them the ropes for building relationships, influencing others, and impacting people and organizations. Achieving individual results got you to this point. Curiosity, discernment, creating the conditions for others to succeed, and strategic thinking will move you forward. Stop worrying about yourself and the next job. Go out and build relationships and bridges with colleagues, leaders, and customers. Help them succeed. This is about taking control and making a difference. For over 35 years I've coached and developed leaders in Fortune 50 companies to small start-up's, CEO's to recent college grads, large multi-national organizations to local non-profits. Some of these folks had good bosses that coached them along the way. Most however, are really smart people who get promoted into leadership positions and then thrown into the fray with no training, life preserver, or first aid kit. Then they hit a point where they don't advance, waiting for the same people who give them a sink or swim opportunity to tell them what's next. My question is - why would you think someone else is going to determine your career development? Here's where I come in. I work with clients to adopt a different approach, one focused on credibility, visibility, influence, and impact. Simply put, build bridges and relationships with critical people and kiss the corporate ladder bye-bye. Opportunities are there. You have to find or make them, not wait for someone to give them to you.
